Hi ppl,
Got an issue that keeps propping up every now and then.
2 machines (1 laptop, 1 desktop) both running XP Pro SP2.
Both have simple file-sharing turned off as I prefer to have greater control.
Shared a folder called "Folder1" on the laptop's desktop.
Can access and copy files directly from Windows explorer through the desktop.
Shared "Folder2" on the laptop's desktop, put some pics in it, and it would not access from the desktop. You can see it, but everytime you try to click on it, its comes up with "You might not have permissionto use this network resource....Access is denied".
Permissions on both folders are set to "Everyone" and full control. Nothing is read-only. Funny thing is, if I copy the whole folder to another, it will be accessible, but if I move it, it won't.
Any ideas?

Well first off moving and copying apply different security permissions in some instances. But generally the parent folder has something to say about permissions child folders.
"By default, an object inherits permissions from its parent object, either at the time of creation or when it is copied or moved to its parent folder. The only exception to this rule occurs when you move an object to a different folder on the same volume. In this case, the original permissions are retained."
By putting the shared folder2 in the desktop folder you encounter the user's folder permissions. Generally there are restrictions on allowing other users to access a folder there, especially a "system" folder like desktop. A better location would be in a folder off the root or in the temp directory. You can just as easily copy a shortcut to that folder to each users desktop.
