I discovered this program in my program files, also in the add/remove control panel with no option to uninstall. Zone alarm showed it listed in files with no process to it. I also contacted HP and they did not or would not specifically state the purpose of the program. I used one of my uninstaller programs and took it out. I have saved the file for now, which is no longer active, but I get the feeling this was not a backup related software but a data gathering software. The bottom line is I never loaded it unless it came with and update for my printer. Just thought I would let others know it is not and isolated case.

The program is a tape backup program. They have a contract with HP until the middle of next year. Here's a link.

I, too, recieved it as an update from HP... or it might have been there all along... I'm not sure as this is a relatively new laptop.
Well, hope this helps ease concerns.

I appreciate your input. I had already checked their (Overland) website and background but as stated HP tech rep did not tell me exactly what it did on my computer and that I don't appreciate. If it is required for updates, diagnostics, and or backing up files related to the printer than fine, but the tech simply stated you can remove it, there will be no difference on printer performance, does not give me the warm fuzzies.
I saved the file and will store on CD until I know exactly what the function is. I don't trust software companies that don't explain the use of extended functional executables that are planted on my system.

A tape drive backup program would only be useful to someone running a server. What would it be the point of putting it on a personal PC???

It's rather handy for those of us who like have COMPLETE backups, too.

I found a few more files related to Overland. I'll try to get rid of them and see what happens. The Overland.zip is where I saved the original Overland folder from Program Files.

Well, I got rid of the rest of the Overland files, but the confounded program still runs every few minutes. Does anyone know of a utility that will capture a log of the program's activity every time it runs and at least show me what and where it is? Thanks.

Digging into the MSI file, in the Overland folder in my Program Files directory, I can see that the files are from HP and are used to install many of the drivers and services (some stupid BTW) for my HP printer.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, k027! Filemon did the trick. Although I couldn't get the filters to work, it showed me that a whole lot of hp related processes were running the second that the little mystery window popped up. I uninstalled everything related to my printer, and the little window never reappeared.
Now, getting the printer reinstalled at the original settings was a whole'nother adventure for another post at another time on another forum, but this problem seems to be solved... for now. Thanks, everyone, for your input.

|
|
I saw this old posting and wanted to share my recent experience. I have an HP Pavilion and noticed the same process upon boot/Windows start which included what appeared to be a script process on the taskbar which only appeared for about one second and then vanished. I downloaded and installed "Security Task Manager" to identify and quarantine questionable processes. STM works great - it enables you to quarantine processes and then restore them later without issue if you feel the process is valid. Using the STM tool, I quarantined "overland/hpcoretech.exe" and the strange little process that I saw at startup went away. I restored it and it showed up again. So, I used STM to quarantine it for good and have not seen it since. The purpose of overland/hpcoretech is not clear but I have seen references to HP COmponent REuse Technology. What this does is not clear and does not seem to have been made public by HP. Anyway, the process has been quarantined and I will never restore it. I recommend keeping it in the quarantine as opposed to deleting it since with the HP software update, it will probably be downloaded and installed again. Keeping it in the STM quarantine will guarantee it not reloading at startup. Good luck all!

You also have to clean your registry and I for one avoid automatic updates as much as possible. And yes, I have an HP pc.

I realise this topic is rather old but it seems to be the best source of info for this overland software. I just found this place through a google search. My computer isn't HP but I installed an HP printer and the printer software did an update and then I had the overland software, sweet. Wanting to stop these HP printer updates at the source I uninstalled HP updates from add/remove programs, I don't recall exactly what it was called but it started with "HP" and had the word "update" in there. It stuck out like a sore thumb because this computer has no HP hardware, only the printer. Then I used a little known feature of CCleaner to uninstall overland. When you open CCleaner look down the left of the screen and click on "tools" then "uninstaller", you will see all kinds of programs that are not in your add/remove programs list including overland. Actually I had "Overland" and "overland" so I uninstalled them both. Hopefully that is the end of that!
