What kind of file is it and which distribution and version of Linux are you running? (not needed if the below works for you)

Most of the time you can just look at it in the default file manager which will uncompress most compressed archive file types. If you need it in the uncompressed versions grab the uncompressed file from your file manager (not the archive containing it) and drag it to your desktop or another location and select "copy" to get the uncompresed version.

This is linux, lets use the CLI.

gzipped? bzipped? regular zip? rar archive? gzipped tarball? bzipped tarball?

gunzip filename.gz
bunzip2 filename.bz2
unzip filename.zip
unrar e filename.rar
tar xfvz filename.tar.gz
tar xjfv filename.tar.bz2
