Is signature limit really 256 characters ??

Because today when I was changing my signature, it was all the time "Your signature is too long" notice, however, I checked it numerous times with some .vbs script I use for this purpose; and it first said that the text is 241 chars (still same notice), then I shortened/stripped it even futher till .vbs script said that the text is 218 chars and there was still the same old notice after submitting it.

So after I shortened it even further (now it lost almost all the meaning -- Mad ...), it was finally accepted; while my .vbs script says that in the current form/size, it's only 203 characters.

Well, surely my .vbs script might be wrong, but I really doubt it, since so far it always calculated the number of characters in a file correctly. Any ideas, do you think that it is possible that the "signature manager" is *somehow* wong ??

Ugh, this reminds me of a thread long long ago where we discussed possibly increasing it and looking at the limitations of certain column types.

Oh Ikeb??

248 characters?

Does your script count spaces and punctuation?
44 spaces
9 punctuation marks

Oh Ikeb??

Yes? Smile

Satyr's right. The limit is lower than 256 ... even considering white space characters. I can't recall exactly the number I came up with but a bit over 200 bytes sounds about right. It's all documented in a post somewhere....

I'd suggested doubling up the space allotted but this got stuck on one of your "todo someday" lists. Wink

You more recently suggested coming up with a phpBB template (ala the wiki template concept) which I observed wouild do nicely for sigs as well ... should you take the sig parsing into account of course. Wink

I was merely remarking that Satyr's current sig is actually 248 characters long.

You could always save a longer text as a graphic Wink

The limit is actually 256 because the software saves some additional info to activate links.

Oh yes sorry Mister2, you see I thought that it's your recommendation for the signature size-limit in future. However, my .vbs script says the current number of characters is 204 (I modified it a bit since last post)

That's cheating ... isn't it? Wink Anyway, I *know* I had problems way before getting to anything like 248 characters ... black or white.

Oh yeah. There was BBcode and links involved but *all* characters totaled to way less than 248 characters.

phpbb inserts additional user-specific digits in the bbcode which adds up the tally.

Ah OK. How would I figure out how to optimize the use of available sig space then?

Anyway, back to my point about templates. Any further thoughts as to the feasibility of using a template to get more sig room?
