Posted: Tue Jan 10, 2006 11:35 pm Post subject: Official update fails after using Guilfanov patch |
|
|
I'm running XP Pro SP2
I installed version 1.3 of the guilfanov patch before the microsoft update became available. When I went to windowsupdate, it said update KB912919 (the official microsoft WMF fix) failed to install, but it didn't tell me why. Suspecting a conflict with the two patches, i uninstalled the guilfanov patch and rebooted. Windowsupdate still failed.
I've tried everything i can think of, and the update fails every time. I re-registered Shimgvw.dll, I reinstalled the fix and updated, but nothing worked. I even downloaded the stand-alone MS patch from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0C1B4C96-57AE-499E-B89B-215B7BB4D8E9&displaylang=en
When i ran it, it said the system could not find the specified file.
It would be nice if I could just ignore the MS update and just leave the guilfanov one on indefinately, but unfortunately, my network uses cisco clean access agent, which won't let me onto the net without the latest critical updates installed (i'm writing from a different computer at the moment)
Any suggestions (except reinstalling windows) would be greatly appreciated.

The official patch and the hotfix do not conflict with each other. Most likely there is a problem in the system which prevents the official patch to install correctly. What's the exact error message you get when you try to install it?
Also examine the KB912919.log file in the c:\windows directory, it might explain what's going on.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Unfortunately, i don't have much more information to provide. Windowsupdate just says error code 0x80070002 and points me to the microsoft FAQ. The standalone download doesn't say much more, i get a window that says Setup Error: The system cannot find the file specified. Doesn't say which file it can't find, though. KB912919.log doesn't exist in c:\windows, though I can see log files for other updates
I seem to be the only one with this problem, i don't doubt you when you say its not a conflict with your patch. All the same, people on this forum know a lot more about this issue than I do, so it seems like the best place to get help.
