After being hit by the wmf exploit, I ran adaware, spybot, spysweeper, panda, AVG, bitdefender, and trendmicro. I also ran various removal tools for high profile viruses. I also ran CWshredder. I analyzed my own HJT logs and combed my registry, and used msconfig to check startup items. I looked in all my startup folders and checked file dates modified. I cleaned up hundreds of infected objects and continue to find a few here and there as of a few hours ago.

1 major and 1 minor problem are leftover:

the minor problem is that my desktop text background is no longer transparent. It is now the color of whatever I set to desktop properties>desktop>color. My wallpaper "ripple" goes over this and the background of the text of files stays the color of the first layer. I reset the text color to white by going back to defaults, but the background transparency is still gone.

Second the big one. Winlogon, the system process, is opening and closing instances of device/tcp and device/adf and instances of itself threads:winlogon (determined by running sysinternals process explorer.) I also know that it continuously writes to the pagefile (determined by running sysinternals file monitor.)

winlogon.exe service can grow to 300megs and 99% cpu usage.

I suspect that it has been dll injected, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure how that is being initialized at startup (since windows gives attackers 5000 different locations to launch stuff from without you knowing Razz.)

I will post my latest HJT log after my latest scan finishes. Any ideas until then are appreciated.

Well, Winlogon.exe definitely tries to connect to the internet on startup, and will begin downloading 'something' and start writing to the page file. No idea how or why. I can firewall it and it will remain normal. What I want to know is what could possibly cause a system utility to do this... or was my winlogon completely replaced?

Size of Winlogon.exe is 502,272.

Here is my HJT log:

Thank you for your patience. If you still require help then we would ask you to:

1/ Ensure that you are using the latest version of HijackThis which should be v1.99.1 and that it is running from a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT), rather then a temporary or desktop one. (Note: To create a new folder open Windows Explorer, click on File, select New then Folder. Type in the name of the new folder in the box provided and press Enter.)

You can download the latest version here, then unzip it to that permanent folder: HijackThis!

2/ Whilst you are waiting for an expert to examine your log, we recommend that you follow our Malware Removal and Prevention , a new system we have devised to enable users to either partially, or fully clean their systems without the direct aid of an expert. Should you still require HJT assistance after completing malware removal, this step will eliminate the need for you to repeat these scans during your log analysis.

3/ Post a fresh post scan log into this thread (under my post right here). A lot can happen in a few days so a new scan log is important.

Please post any feedback on how easy you found it to follow the steps in our
Malware Removal and Prevention in this same topic reply.
Your input will enable us to refine it for other users.
We thank you for your participation.

4/ Copy (the URL in your address-bar) and paste this link of your HijackThis Log thread into this page here:
CastleCops Link/p629342-Unhandled_Logs.html#629342 <<-- Here, click it. Put the address URL of your HijackThis Log thread in that topic thread.
Do NOT post your address URL as a new topic.

.....and someone will help you ASAP! Thumbs Up
