I want to put a whole new Win95 on an old 486 hard drive.
What do I need to do? I have a Win95 restore disk.
Do I just run that, or do I need to do a reformat first?

Hi Rbig,
Is the restore disk for this system? Is the disk a CDROM or a diskette?
If you are looking to reinstall using the restore CD that came with the system, it is pretty straight forward, If the Restore disk is a diskette, you will usually need either a CDROM or your drive (hopefully) has a separate partition that contains the "restore" information.
If the Restore disk is not originally from this system, the issue is a little tricker because you may need to locate the correct driver files for your hardware. This can be tricky on a system that old but there are some resources on the Internet that sometimes have the files you need. Actually, if this is the case, I would recommed that you see if you can get a copy of Win '98 SE. It will run better and has a better chance of having the drivers you need for the old system. It's drive space requirements are a little bigger and the memory (RAM) requirements double (16MB Min. If I remember correctly but 32 mb is more likely to run well. Win '95 needs a min. of 8 but really need 16 MB. I've seen several systems that run OK with 12 but 16 is much better.)
If the restore disk is not specific for the system do not try to use it. There are some short cuts to installing these O.S that can help you get the O.S. installed even if the restore CD is for this computer but I really need some information first.
what size is the Hard drive?
How much RAM does the machine contain?
Is the Restore disk, cd or diskette and is it for this system?
What are you going to use the system for?
ZZ
