The spammers are changing their approaches so fast these days that I often find my inbox full of messages using a "new" approach - so I set up a filter. The spammers move on but the filter stays 'cos I don't know it's outlived its usefulness.
In some respect it doesn't matter, maybe slows down MW checking process a little but so what? Well it's a matter of filter management, I've got a very long list of them operating and, for example, maybe the best thing to do is to make an existing filter "automatic without notification delete" rather than set up a new one or perhaps just add a rule to an existing filter.
A practical example: a couple of months ago I was getting hundreds of spams a day from senders called Nannie, Gerhard or Reyna (at lots of different domains). Since those are unusual names and I don't know anyone with those names I set up a filter for any of them in the "from" field. Spam using those names has stopped now and I just MIGHT get a genuine new correspondent called Gerhard so it would be nice if the filter had automatically expired after 30 days of no activity. Its a nuisance having to remember to do it myself and search through the filters to delete the right one.

Perhaps make it optional, maybe with an adjustable time limit as with the blacklist.
There are some filters I have had disabled for some time now that I may wish to use again. For instance I have some that work in conjuction with my ISP's spam filter that I'm not using at the present time because I've turned off the ISP filter. Every once in awhile I just like to use them for testing to see at what level I could set the ISP filter if I decide to use it again. I also have other filters that I would turn back on if I got overwhelmed with spam, sort of "emergency use only" filters I guess you might call them.
