Hi Folks,

I have been having problems with my PC taking 5 to 10 minutes to load-up and be available to run apps. I have noticed that the CPU is running at 100% during this time and have now discovered that its vsmon.exe (Zone Alarm) that's causing the problem.

Can anyone please advise what is causing this and how I can stop it?

I have found a link to this problem on Google which takes you to the Zone Alarm website but they have conveniently deleted the article.

Thanks for a great information source, long may it continue.

Cheers

I searched google and found the following links to cause alarm regarding your problem. Also, regarding the topic at ZoneAlarm that has been deleted that you found through google, click on "cached" for that link and see if it is viewable then.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/vsmon.exe-7071.html
CastleCops Link/s4788-vsmon_exe.html
http://www.file.net/process/vsmon.exe.html
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=vsmon.exe

Most importantly however, is this link

http://ivic.zonelabs.com/tmpl/AdvisoryArticle?action=detail&aid=20040728sa_000021.xml&view=sa_view&reset=t

I find the following sites helpful regarding this subject.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/spycheck/SWList.asp?pg=1&st=0
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm
http://www.answersthatwork.com/

Can you verify whether this is a worm (ZoneAlarm) or for ZoneAlarm (True Vector)?

i also notice vsmon running all the time and CPU=100%.i have the latest free version of ZA.
I checked the advisery article of Zone labs and searched vsmon on my computer. The location of the file is the correct one so it seems not to be the worm.

However i suspect ZA really slows down my computer:

1.it takes a lot to load the OS(windows 2000 p)
2.90% of the times i must shut down the pc manually because it remains frozen on a black screen with 1 underline blinking in the upper left corner of the screen.

How does ZA slow down a computer and what can i do about it?

Thank you

See here:

90% of the hits to my blog lately have been about vsmon.exe, and I'm not even a geek!

Well, I also had this 100% CPU hangup caused by vsmon.exe, and once I heard about the Zone Alarm email protection feature possibly being the culprit, I turned it all off. And afterwards I still had the 100% CPU problem! So I did a full in-depth scan of my hard drive and it found a trojan in a file CWshredder.exe I downloaded some time ago. Apparently it had taken over the vsmon services because once I deleted it, my CPU problem disappeared and my vsmon behaved normally.

My situation may be unique to others, but is sure worth checking to see if you have this infected file!
