The request to the TotalNetShield server is encrypted when it leaves your computer and can only be read by their server - anyone else (your ISP, for instance) just sees - at most - an encrypted mess.
They might know that a request went to the TNS server - but I'm not even sure they'd know that much, because I'm not that familiar with "Secure Tunneling" or VPN. Pete

They'd know. The network topography would dictate that your request go through your provider before hitting the actual backbone.

Internet is actually not the safest place on this planet (believe it or not).
The less the potential hacker knows about you, the better it is (for your own safety and privacy).
http://projectip.com/ (shows your IP-address, and some more information about you and your computer)
