Whats your fave LiveCD version of Linux?
I like the mpentoo light version but am also a fan of austrumi, DSL and MeanPuppy.
Whats your fave LiveCD for those moments where you need to whip a linux distro out of your back pocket?

My first choice is SLAX KillBill Edition v 5.1.8.1 easily installed onto hard drive to create a dual boot system with Windows Xp using these instructions. I find this one to be the fastest of linux distros that I tested(including Suse 10 and 10.1, Ubantu, and Puppy)
http://www.slax.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7395
My second choice is Puppy Linux 2.11 easily installed using these instructions to create a dual boot system wtih Windows XP
http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwin/step00-linnwin.htm
By the way, of you already have Windows XP installed, you can created a multi-boot system using the instructions above and end up having a choice of WindowsXp, Puppy Linux, and Slax KillBill Edition V 5.1.8.1.

I have a fairly old portable computer that is really aging and decided
to try giving it a new life by installing a multi-boot XP / Linux. After looking around at various Linux versions I decided to try Xubuntu.
I downloaded the live-cd and tried it out. It was much faster (even from
the CD) than my old XP partition. I decided to take the risk and install
it.
I downloaded Gparted as a live-cd and created a new partition at the end of my disk. The new partition was 4GO. I probably could have done the same thing with my Xubutu live-cd but I did not notice that it was there before.
I rebooted and checked that my windows XP still worked. It did without any problems. I then installed Xubuntu. The only part that was not straight forward was the partioning. I chose a manual partition and to format the 4Go at the end of my hard disk to ext3. I also chose the /mount/hda2 as the root.
The installation worked well and internet worked straight away. The
sound and video worked but not with all the files. I had to update the
codecs and other files as described on the Ubuntu internet site. The
internet works well and I can even read and write to my windows files.
I now had the best of both worlds. On the one hand everything that worked on Windows-XP still works, and all the programs that only run on windows can still be used. I am also in no hurry to reconfigure all my
audio/video files, internet files and blue-tooth and wifi connections.
When I need them I just boot on windows.
On the other hand I could now use any USB key without getting the
annoying blue dos screen with error 0D . The Gnumeric is also much
better than my aging out of date Lotus.
I then came across Puppy Linux. I tried out the live-cd . It was even
faster. I decided if it does not even need a partition for itself and it
is free why not try it.
I copied all the live-cd's files to a dos directory c:\Puppy
I then copied the pup_213.sfs and zdrv_213.sfs to c:\ .
I rebooted on Xubuntu . I changed the grub configuration file as follows
;
sudo mousepad /boot/grub/menu.lst
(This command might be different in other Linux versions e.g.
su gedit /grub/grub.conf )
You must make sure you enter the right password as if not, you will not
be able to save the changes to the file.
I added the following at the end of the menu.lst file;
######################
#Puppy addition for Grub
title Puppy Linux 2.13
# rem (hd0,0) = hda1 (hd0,1) = hda2 (hd1,3) = hdb4
kernel (hd0,0)/Puppy/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)/Puppy/initrd.gz
boot
#####################
I saved the changes and rebooted the computer on the Puppy boot
The first time it took some time to load. One must be sure to enter the
right screen parameters. All the other questions are straight forward.
The Puppy session charged up. In order to use a hard drive one must
mount it . This needs to be done only the first time Puppy is run as it
will afterwards be saved .To do this open the menu Puppy in the bottom
left-hand corner and chose files and then puppy drive mounter. You can
chose the drives needed from the list. Afterwards you will be able to
read and write to these partitions.
The internet is also not automatic and has to be configured. It is also
done simply.
I now use Puppy everyday. It really is extremely fast. On the train I
read all my files that are on my windows partition. It is much quicker
in charging the files than XP. There is no configuration needed for
Microsoft .doc .xls and Adobe's .pdf.
When leaving the Puppy session for the first time you will be asked if
you want to save the configuration and the size and location of the
file.
This file is small and can be afterwards copied and restored for various different configurations.
The safeguard file is on the Linux partition and not with the rest of
the Puppy files. This is not too tidy but I could not care. In any case
in a few months time I will buy a new portable computer with Microsoft Vista on it.

I'll put in a coupla suggestions, even though the thread is probably too old to be of use...
Goblin....the desktop is...very AVANT-GARDE....but it runs nice and I got it to do everything but print...
Santa Fe... just...really.....nice..... but.... the folks running the place are...dunno... but it, again, did everything but print...
Of course a lot of live CDs won't print...so no biggie there...
AND...if you go to a second hand computer "shoppe"...and hunt around for an old HP in the 500, 600 series...
THEY...will print, and give REALLY good output...I printed about maybe...a thousand... 6 page color newsletter copies... front and back using those old workhorses using both Windblows and about halfway through Linux...
come back and tell us your results?

after two weeks of using PCLinuxOS.... I would have to recommend it over Xandros for two reasons;
a) for the person with a high powered computer, PCLinuxOS has some really great 3D effects...that Xandros only has with considerable work
b) it's a live CD that folks can try befor they fly....
But, of course, Xandros is my main squeeze....
