Has anyone thought about charging annually for the Premium Membership? I know sites like Experts Exchange do this. Maybe it would help generate more cash.
I would be against that. I already am contributing by volunteering MY time helping others and sharing what I know about IT. I think that applies to a good many of the regulars here.

Strapping me with yet another recurring financial task is not something I would appreciate.

And once it's a required fee - it is no longer a donation - which means all kinds of things to the Tax Man.

For as long as I have been here, the Premium Sign-up Page has shown the "Introductory" rate of $10. Introductory? For how many years?

Bump it up to a one-time $25-$35 for new members - but don't charge a monthly or even annual fee. And certainly keep the current free access free - many folks are struggling to keep their homes connected - almost mandatory if you have kids in school - and they want their kids and identities to be safe, and I don't want their machines compromised and turned into a threat to the rest of us. There needs to be a safe place for everyone to get free, competent help, and this is it.

Experts Exchange is a valuable source of information, but has a totally different "atmosphere". I don't want CastleCops to be like Experts Exchange!

Now what I might pay an annual fee for is an "expanded" CastleCops Newsletter (BTW Paul, the Newsletter link in the left panel is currently broken), along the lines of the paid version of Brian Livingston's and Fred Langa's Windows Secrets newsletter - but this being a security site first - a newsletter geared towards teaching readers how to "practice safe computing" and have an enjoyable computing experience for their families.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for your support.

Did you ever read Dylan Thomas? I always really liked Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Quote:
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

I liken it to the DDoS. We will not roll over and die, we will not back down, we will not stop doing what we are doing because some jerk doesn't it. This is what we do, CC is a labor of love. We will fight and rage, but we will not go away silent.

This like all other attacks that have come before it has done one thing. It has hardened our resolve to do everything we can to take back our internet. If we don't who will?

Send in your phish and your malware, and when you do know that we are still here, and we are staying here. We will not go away silently or gently we will fight every step of the way, because we believe CC and each one of you are worth it.

Bill, I don't think I could agree with you more. There is nothing stopping those that can afford it from donating more than $10, or donating more than once when they can afford to. $1.00 a month will get them a premium membership and all its benefits within a year, even if it will create an accounting nightmare for Robin. Wink

As the premier security and *education* site on the net, it should remain free for those that need help.

What I was thinking is that those that donate more than the $10 get a bigger badge, but I'm afraid something like that would result in "badge envy". Wink weee

Robin, I'm fairly new. I don't know all of the benefits I get with a premier membership. Perhaps if that were more clearly explained, I would be more inclined to become a Premier member. I know about the storage, but my brain scan could probably fit on a floppy disk. Wink

Oh, tell Paul to check his mail. Again. weee

Uh...Tim, I don't know how to break this to you gently, but...uh... if you look over there to the left in your badge area in between Fred and your GST*, you should see a Premium Member badge. Apparently you've already been inclined enough.

In summary, more details to follow...

We love to thank ApplicationX for hosting us for so long, however, due to DDoS's we must move.

Prolexic has offered pro-bono services to CastleCops during DDoS attacks.

ISC OARC is now hosting CastleCops servers. We are also removing all advertisements from CastleCops and are moving toward Sponsorships.
Ah, so that is why when i forward phishing emails i get a fail error returned to me from Prolexic.

Paul

I did whois the domain and send you an email the first day it happend with details on who is behind the attacks, where their botnet is and logs of them ddosing your website. You did not get back to me. You should know I have been monitoring this person for some time and have all his information, and previous botnets over the past few months.

irc.bluehell.org #bluehell msg me there.

And FYI FBI already know of him, he's been in trouble before, and is about to be locked up for assault charges so I expect the problem will disappear soon (rumour has it ;-])

Yeah and it's not related to ryan1918.com
Come talk to me when you get 5 minutes and I will give you more info, although im sure some *other* people in the game may of already contacted you, atleast thats what ive been told.
