I'm sorry to hear about your cancer problem. Crying or Very sad

I think you should definitely try to find a second opinion like others have already suggested. I know I have posted about this before, but my sister was in the same kind of position with cancer. She had the melanoma type. She was told. after three operations, to go home and live life the best she could because there wasn't anything they could do for her anymore. I found a book that has a diet to cure cancer. Since she had nothing to lose, she followed the diet, and she got better. She did the diet in 2004, and she still OK now. The name of the book is "Breuss Cancer Cure" just in case you like to know. There is also more info here:
http://curezone.com/diseases/cancer/breuss.asp

I bought the book at a health food store, along with all the ingredients for the diet. Good luck!!! I'll be thinking of you and wishing all the best.

Take care!!!

Thanks for the info about the book.

I told Mom about it this morning. She took it a lot better than Sis did.

I found a ray of hope yesterday at www.cancercenter.com. Cancer Treatment Centers of America. <CTCA> Closest one to me is in Philly, but they work off my insurance, of which I don't have any. I applied yesterday for Anthem, but the guy from CTCA told me Anthem will deny me.
This CTCA seems to use some new technologies that they apparently don't have at the local hospital. "Tomography" is some kind of ultra-high precision radiation that they didn't have at my hospital, MetroHealth. I'm going to Google for it later.

Seems You CAN'T get insurance if you have a pre-existing condition. I got a referral number from the guy at CTCA that I talked to, yesterday. Called American Cancer Society, seems they have a "Clinical Trials Unit", with people that can help. So I'm looking into that.

My Doctor's not going to be back until Thursday, (After July 4th). I still want to talk to him. I'm going to also see about maybe seeing my surgeon, but he just got a big promotion, so he may not be available anymore.

I'm really getting scared. Did I mention that?

An old girlfriend is still gnawing at me; she keeps telling me I got diagnosed too late, because I'm so stubborn. I should have gone to get it checked out sooner. My doctor told me several months back that this all through no fault of my own.

What will happen NEXT? Stay tuned.
Crying or Very sad

Hi there Oyle,

Oyle Posted:

Quote:
I'm starting to get nervous. Will I even make it to retirement age? How long do I have? I'll be 51 the end of this August. How will I know when the time is near?

Ya know Oyle. I was given two years to live in 1987 & it's now 2007 Smile

We never know when our time is up, but it's always, ALWAYS good to
have a good mental attitude regarding illnesses. I actually said to myself
that I wasn't gonna let this thing beat me down within two years & I'm
still here & will turn 44 in October Smile

I know the pain can be horrific. I take Morphine & Dilaudid because the
pain gets so bad sometimes. Also I know it's more difficult in the USA
to get Narcotics filled or refilled, but they will accept (or should accept) a
fax of the Rx.

They will do it up here in Canada, but only in dire emergencies because
the Doctors usually like to see you to write your Rx because they like to
take your blood pressure & stuff like that because strong Narcotics can
affect your blood pressure (lower it) & breathing (shallower)

BUT Oyle, we just never know when our number is up. Like the old saying
goes; "You could run out on the road & get hit by a bus."

You take good care & like I said before, you're in my prayers every day!

The US rates narcotics based on abuse potential from Schedule I (not legal in US, like heroin) to Schedule V (over the counter drugs, but you must sign for them at the pharmacy window, like codeine cough syrup). Schedule II is legal drugs with high abuse potential (percocets, oxycontin, other narcotics if they are not combined with other medications like acetaminophen or aspirin) and there are special rules for these. The pharmacy must have the original prescription -- no faxes or phone prescriptions are acceptable, tho hospice pharmacies generally will trust that the signed prescription will eventually be mailed to them and will accept faxes. Some states require special triplicate prescription forms, too. Those drugs also cannot have refills on them, but a new ruling makes it clear doctors are allowed to write several scripts at a time and put "fill after ...." so the patient doesn't have to physically pick up each precription every month.

Some people can do as well with a schedule III or IV pain medicine, but not if you would need to take so much you would get toxic amounts of the acetaminophen or whatever else is in it.

If you are uninsured and unable to work due to your illness, don't be afraid to check to see what medical assistance benefits are available in your state. You may have to be insistent to find out about programs that will pick up expenses after you have paid so much that what you have left qualifies as poverty level.

You can get information about clinical trials at the National Cancer Institute or Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group

There comes a time in every life when he is helpless to change what has come upon him.

Having experienced such things more than once in my almost 75 years I have found strength, as a Christian, in giving my burden to my Lord, Jesus Christ.
He has promised that He will never leave nor forsake me, that He will not allow anything in my life that I cannot endure (in His strength), and I know that whatever happens my eternal future is assured as a result of God's grace appropriated through faith in Christ.

I know that my prayers are heard, and that what is best will be the outcome. I don't have to understand it, I just am to trust the Lord, and I do.

I would hope and pray that you have this same assurance and the strength that can only come from Him.

Be thankful for each day, and try to look at it as an opportunity to strengthen others.

William Cowper, had problems of depression and attempted suicide at least twice, but was prevented from doing so.
After one such attempt he wrote the words to "God Moves in Mysterious Ways."

The first verse is.

God moves in mysterious ways,
His wonders to perform.
He plants His footsetps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

The last is.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan His work in vain,
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

May God's grace and mercy fall upon you and your family.
Jerry

I had implant radiation treatments for tongue cancer at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. Since you mentioned Tomography" they do it there.
It is a superb cancer center, and I would advise you to check it out.

There is a guest house a block from the hospital.

Some more cancer more info.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal,Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour.
Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts)and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

Oyle, i'm very sorry to hear of your prognosis. As others have already said, try to remain optimistic and live each day in the fullest way you possibly can. And don't be reluctant to seek help and comfort wherever and whenever you can. Also, the sooner you tell your mother the news, the better. As a mother myself, i'm sure she will appreciate being able to take care of you in whatever way she is able to. That's what us mothers are good at doing Smile

Sending you cyber hugs too!

I can tell you of a real-life example of this. My uncle was diagnosed with throat cancer and told he might only have a few months to live. Of course he was worried about what time he had left, and whether he'd be in great pain. Well, one day, on his way to the doctor, he was hit by a bus - truly - and died immediately. So he never did end up suffering.

Keep on keeping on!

Since learning of your illness, Oyle, my prayers have been offered up to heaven for you!

What wonderful/inspirational messages you are receiving from this Forum! Perhaps obtaining a second or even third opinion would be a good idea; having your present situation thoroughly assessed, in all areas, might be a good way for you to obtain some of the answers you are looking for, in order to help you cope and move forward,

Sincerely,

fwc

Cancer is not anyone's "fault." Your old g/f is having problems processing the news. She is blaming you, not so much for your illness (although she may think that's what it's about), but that she feels badly about it. Sheesh! As if being sick was not enough, we have to deal with how others react to it.

I'm not good at words of comfort. Try as I might, I can't come up with something to say that has not been said before, and everything sounds hollow to me. Nevertheless, I am sorry you are going through this. Nobody should have to.

I'm sure you have reached far and wide, but just in case these resources did not come up in your search, here are a few that may be helpful:

*** The Patient Advocate Foundation’s (PAF) Colorectal CareLine is designed to provide assistance to patients with colorectal cancer. It offers financial aid through the Financial Aid Fund for those diagnosed with colorectal cancer. For more information, call the Colorectal CareLine team at 1–866–657–8634.

*** GovBenefits.gov is a partnership of Federal agencies with a shared vision to provide improved, personalized access to government assistance programs. This Web site’s online screening tool is free, easy-to-use, and completely confidential. The user answers a series of questions, then the Web site generates a list of government benefit programs that the user may be eligible to receive, along with information about how the user can apply. Telephone: 1–800–333–4636 (1–800–FED–INFO) Web site:
    http://www.govbenefits.gov/govbenefits_en.portal

*** CancerCare is a national nonprofit agency that offers free support, information, financial assistance, and practical help to people with cancer and their loved ones. Financial assistance is given in the form of limited grants for certain treatment expenses. Services are provided by oncology social workers and are available in person, over the telephone, and through the agency’s Web site. CancerCare’s reach also extends to professionals—providing education, information, and assistance. A section of the CancerCare Web site and some publications are available in Spanish, and staff can respond to calls and e-mails in Spanish. Information about financial assistance for all cancers is available at http://www.cancercare.org/get_help/assistance/cc_financial.php on the Internet. Telephone: 1–800–813–4673 (1–800–813–HOPE) Web site: http://www.cancercare.org

*** Last, but not least, there is Social Security Disability. You qualify for SSDI. (See http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/13.00-NeoplasticDiseases-Malignant-Adult.htm#13.18). Medicare does not kick in until you've been in the program for two years (which is asinine if you have cancer and need treatment), but you should apply anyway. You could very well be alive two years from now and need some insurance to cover medical expenses.
