A guy who lives in my building has an old Windows 95 computer. It used to work but then suddenly stopped booting past the BIOS. It asks for the system disk then says press any key to continue. Problem is, he doesn't have a system disk. The computer was given to him second-hand.

From the opening screen I was able to go to the CMOS setup. I changed the boot sequence to CDROM, C, A.

He has a floppy and a CD-ROM drive. I don't have a floppy drive (just a CD/DVD drive with WinXP Pro) and would like to help him. Would it be possible to create a bootable CD from the ISO files made for a bootable floppy? Windows 95 floppy bootdisk files can be downloaded for free from places like Bootdisk.com.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Btw, he's disabled and living on a pension.

Hi...

I wouldn't see why not....same information, just different media. Wink

From the information you provided, it sounds like the BIOS has CD-ROM support which will allow it to boot from this device. That's helpful, because Windows 95 boot disks do not provide "in house" CD-ROM support. If this becomes an issue, try using a Windows 98 boot disk.

Off the bat, as a preliminary guess, I would say either the hard drive or possibly a cable or IDE controller just went out.

What is the system exactly and what information is listed in POST? Is the hard drive listed? If not, go into the BIOS again and see what is listed for the drives, if anything. Does it see anything if it allows you to conduct a search?

If not, try installing another older hard drive (1 to 10GB) and see if that fixes it. You should be able to find these at second hand stores or computer recycling places that have thrift shops.

If this works, let me know if you need the appropriate DOS commands to get Windows 95 (or 98 would be better, if the system will run it smoothly) reinstalled, provided he has the CD.

Let me know what you find...

Best Regards...
