I'm forced to use Vista in a work related situation and a basic component of Windows... Windows Explorer, on a Sony Vaio Business Edition either just doesn't work or becomes non-functional sometime into a session and MS acts as if the problem doesn't exist.

Use more Linux! Smile

With apologies to the advert! Smile

PostPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2007 11:45 pm    Post subject: MSWord won't save to .doc or .rtf with right click or dialog
Reply with quote

I use OO on the Vista machine and the reason for that is.....

the MS Works 2007 SUPPLIED with the machine.....will not open .docx..... ????? WHAT!? you have to get a "viewer"....not not a "saver".... a "viewer".....

A microsloth way of forcing people to buy MSOffice 2007....

but.... my little OO from Sun works just fine thank you very much....BUT..... Microsloth will NOT let me set it as the "default" to open a doc.... if one just "double clicks" Microsloth opens....

PART 2.... a student showed me somthing about Office 2007....

there is no "right click" to save and....there is only a little icon of a "floppy" at the top left to save with....and it only saves in .docx

The only to save as .doc or .rtf is to go into a save dialog box which is BURIED.... and then set it to save "globally" in .doc or in .rtf.... and you can't do it.."on the fly" it has to be done beforehand....

I teach online and had a student who was TRYING to send me assignments in .doc...I normally use a Linux system with OO and have not been able to get the latest .deb "translator" to work yet... and didn't know until then just what she had been going through to get the thing to work.....

The above are only Two...there are more Evil or Very Mad reasons why I'm working as fast as possible on my GUI for Linux...

sheesh....

well,
I do not want anyone to think that I badmouth a certain operating system and then walk off

I said that there is no right click to "save as" in MSoffice 2007, well, that is right....

however, apparently MS thinks that "everybody knows that"...and the "save as" is now in the little Gordian Knot that is at the top lefft of the office window....well, i guess that putting "file" there might be a great improvement for some, but it seems to me to be a sly way of defaulting to saveing in .docx....

so...one can just "save as"...I was WRONG...but...still...it grates...that they eliminated the "easy" way...right click.....

hmmmmm more "sophisitcated" to have to mouse up to the Gordian knot I suppose....
