|

It is my personal opinion is that Prevx is updated a bit too often (since as mentioned I am still connecting with dial-up) especially because there's so much (too much) to download. I am of course talking about the full >13 MB in-file-size product upgrades and not just partial definitions/whatever updates that are performed "on-the-fly".
For example, I needed to download (from older to newer):
UPDATE.PREVX2.1.0.1.30.2K2K3XP.x86AMD64.exe package on 18. June
UPDATE.PREVX2.1.0.2.47.2K2K3XP.x86AMD64.exe package on 1. July 2007
UPDATE.PREVX2.1.0.2.53.2K2K3XP.x86AMD64.exe package on 7. July 2007
.. and a few days ago when I last checked there was already a new (IIRC 2.1.0.2.56) version to download. And note that during this time from the last such "full" update there were no partial updates at all!!
P.S. - Yeah I know that generally I should only be happy that the product is updated as often as possible, but again, in my particular situation this is a bit too often anyway.

suggestion: read the release notes and if the upgrade contains a change you fancy or fixes something, download it, if not wait until the next one.

Thanks for the suggestion simmikie; and yeah, I indeed visited the Software Releases/Latest Software Release Notes page, and it surely is very informative.
I am only interested in one more thing: if I choose to not to upgrade ti this new version that's available, do I then still get those partial updates (i.e. AFAIK these are referred to as "silent updates" by the Prevx folks), of course, if there will be any released during this time??!

hey satyr, i have found that when a new build is installed fresh, it usually contains any last moment/up to the moment updates. but on a couple of occassions, after the install has completed Prev Agent has auto updated itself. or i check for updates manually after the install to be sure.
also i disable auto-updates in Prevx2. although, those minor updates almost never require a system reboot, i simply choose when i will engage the update server in my own time, usually once a day.

Hey all once again, I am curious about one more thing. It's that today I visited the Software Releases/Latest Software Release Notes page once again, and now the latest release is "Build 61", however there's a note beside it that says: "Prevx 2.0 v1.0.2 Build 61 (New Installations Only)"...
And after that I went to Downloads page and attempted to start download (from the one link under "For Desktop/Laptop -- Windows XP (All versions - 32/64bit) and Windows 2000 Professional."), it did in fact start to download the package named: SETUP.PREVX2.1.0.2.53.2K2K3XP.x86AMD64.exe
Anyway, I am interested what does this mean?? That those that only update their installations will never get it (never get all these new features, like for isntance "Restructured local database", "Improved recovery and data management of local database"), or will they get it too in future updates??!
So should I wait for a few more future releases and update my current (outdated) installation then, or should I simply un-install Prevx 2.0, and install it fresh with the package mentioned above?!!

New builds are first released as the full installer only, then they work on the update version. This also allows us to release it more slowly, so that if something is wrong then fewer people experience the troubles. One of the big things is that this also gives corporate customers a chance to test out the new version before the update is deployed to the rest of the company. If they find out that the new version doesn't work right with some proprietary program they use, then they can hold off. At any rate, that's how every release goes. It's first released as the full install only, and then released on the automatic update some days later.
So if you are having problems with the version you have now, it might be worth uninstalling and installing the new version. Otherwise you can wait a few days and it will be installed by the updater.
