|
|
Is there such a thing? My mothers friend and her sister both live waaaay out of town and only have dial up. Is there a wireless router available that will work? To the best of my knowledge the modems they have are all built in (1 desktop and 1 laptop for each of them). The laptops they have built in wireless adapters.
I'm trying to wrap my head around the whole concept, but the only thing I can think of would be a modem/router combo device. Or can you hook the telephone line into the desktop modem and get output from the desktop ethernet???
Thank you,

It would have to be a router with an internal dial-up modem, your first thought was the correct one. You cannot connect a dial-up modem to the WAN side of a router - won't work. Then you connect the computers themselves to the router using either wired or wireless in the usual way. What then happens is there should be some utility with the router that causes it to dial out when the computer tries to connect to the internet.
I have occasionally seen a couple around, but not many, and they were expensive IIRC. Googling is your best bet to find one of those odd-ball creatures. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

Thanks PCBruiser. I did a search at newegg a few months ago and came up blank. It does seem a bit complicated. I was able to find a product called WiFlyer, but it's at least $100. Thanks again for your help. _________________ Being sane is enough to drive anyone crazy.

Hi blacklupine and thank you,
The link is interesting and a bit confusing. I'm going to find out more details about their desktops. I know the 1 is running either Windows ME or 2000 and I'm not sure that it has an Ethernet port. I think that was what the link was talking about. Hooking the router to the Ethernet port of the desktop that has the dial up modem and then setting up ICS to communicate to the laptop via the router. Does that sound right?
I'm also going to suggest to them about getting a satellite connection since they already have the tv setup. It would also be much faster.
Take care,

Hi innerpeace, One point to take into consideration is the type of telephone line they have ie is it ISDN, ADSL or a normal telephone line (PSTN) if they are on the latter I doubt that they would have a sufficient transfer rate to cope with the demand.
I would agree that a satellite link would be the best option and whilst it will be more expensive you will not need to be 'on call' 24/7!!!
Best wishes,
BL

Hi, it's a dial up connection and they live very far from town. The deer population probably outnumbers the humans Lol. They don't even get near 56k speeds. I've also been thinking about the transfer rate because it's bound to be slower than whatever speed the host computer receives. I'll get more information from them and present them with what options I've read in this post.
Thanks again _________________ Being sane is enough to drive anyone crazy.

Well, if you look on ebay for an SG20 you should find one for under $100.00 out of the box it should work really well for you.
They were set up to run squid so there is built in disk caching and that should help things for your parents.
I use a few of them around here for clients of mine so let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks stoker, at least one of them is a regular user of Ebay. I will have a look at the SG20.
