Hi. I was referred here from security cadets.
I had a worm on my pc and have successfully cleaned it, but this involved uninstalling java in order to update to the new version...
I have tried time and again to install from the official package, but i get an error as it tries to unpack the data...
Any ideas?

Hi. I'm running XP sevice pack 2.
Never had problems in the past and thought that the installation package was corrupt but the people at security cadets said that they successfully downloaded and installed the java from the link which they gave me which is here...

5th one down the list.
I tried the offline and online installers and tried from other sites... No joy.
I just tried again and now cant even download the installer so cant tell you the error code but it says something like
"Error 1721.There is a problem with this windows installation package. A program required could not be run, Please contact the vendor..."
we tried booting in safe mode and re-registering windows installer but that hasnt helped...

Hi,
How did you re-register Windows Installer?
Did you re-register Windows Installer as per this KB article?

If no, can you try this instead:

Download Windows Installer 3.1 from the above link. Save all your work and close all opened programs, then install Windows Installer 3.1.
After that, restart your computer. Then try installing Java again.
If it doesn't work, try finding old copies of Java installer (assuming you haven't uninstalled your older versions of Java).
They can usually be found in this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Windows Username>\Application Data\Sun
You need to show hidden files and folders before you can see the Application Data folder.
Inside the Sun folder, there will be more folders. Inside one of these folders, you will find an installer. If you have not uninstalled your old versions of Java, right click on this installer and select Repair.
When done, uninstall all your older versions of Java, then install the latest version of Java. _________________ Dragon

Hi and thanks for the advice but i have tried everything and no luck...
I tried the System Fike Checker too and it wants to re install some files from the .dll cache but when i put in my installation disc, it tells me it's the wrong disc...
I use media centre edition and tried all 3 discs (both install discs and update 2005 disc)
Any ideas why this is?
Still cant download the installer from the Sun site... keep getting "general error..." but i found an old version in the Application Data folder which wont install either. Error 1721.
I built the pc myself so i know the discs are the same ones i used to install windows the first time.

Hi,
System File Checker will have problems with updated PCs.
One reason is because the files on the CDs are not as new as the files on the PC.
System File Checker will not replace new files with old files.
Let's see if we can get a log out.
I assumed you saved the latest Java installer to desktop. Replace setup.exe with the Java installer file name.
Click on Start > Run. Enter in the following:
msiexec.exe /i "%userprofile%\Desktop\setup.exe" /l *v "%userprofile%\Desktop\ErrorLog.txt"
This will create a log file named ErrorLog.txt on your desktop while you attempt to install the latest Java.
Please post this log in your next reply. _________________ Dragon

When i open that in the run command box, a window called windows installer opens up with a button at the bottom which says OK.
I left it open and tried installing java, which failed and no log has been saved.
I tried again, this time pressing ok first, then installing but still no log file...
Is there something i'm missing?

Re-reading your post, I have one question.

double clicked it to install and it gave the same error as the other installer.
I tried repair too, i get an error saying "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed"

Yep. all been uninstalled...
Tried the windows install cleanup anyway and no java on the list...
It is as if the worm i had has deleted some files from windows and they need replacing, but how to go about that?
Windows update is up to date...

Checked it out and having problems with it...
It needs files from the service pack 2 cd, which i have and it's the original one i used to install in the first place.
However, it keeps saying it's the wrong cd...
I hope i'm not headed for a complete re-installation of windows cos i have files i really cant lose and no way of backing them up as have no extra storage space!

I'm sure it's the service pack 2 cd i have. It is an OEM version (media centre edition 2005)
I have two main install discs and a third update disc which i assume is service pack 2... it says on the disc "Updates for version 2005"
Is this not the correct disc then? I have tried putting all 3 discs into the drive and each time it says wrong disc.
Do i need to download sp2 seperately do you think?
I dont remember doing that when i first installed from these discs...
