Download KILLBOX, extract it to your desktop.

Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method so Windows will start with minimal drivers and running processes. To do this restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". See How to Boot in "SAFE MODE" tutorial if needed.

  1. Open killbox.exe.
  2. Click on Tools>Delete Temp Files
  3. A box will open with a list of all user profiles.
  4. Check the following boxes at a minimum for each profile by clicking on the drop down and checking the boxes that are enabled. Some will not apply and those boxes will not be available to check. Make sure you do this for all the profiles listed.
  5. Temporary Internet Files
  6. Temp Files
  7. XP Prefetch
  8. If you want to clean your cookies, history, and list of recent files run you may check those boxes as well.

Then,,
Check on the Button titled "Delete Selected Temp Files"
Exit by clicking the Button titled "Exit(Save Settings)"
Once back into the main killbox program.

  • Check the following boxes:
    Standard File Kill
  • Highlight each entrie (one at a time) in the quote box below and then Copy them.
    Quote:

    C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\RACLE~1
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\chkntfs.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ iexplore.dll

  • Then, press Ctrl+V to paste the file in the space provided.
  • Then click the Red X ...and for the confirmation message that will appear, you will need to click Yes.
  • A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No

Note::Killbox will let you know if a file does not exist.

Run HijackThis, and press "Do a System Scan Only".
1. When the scan is complete place a check mark next to the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.begin2search.com/googlesidesearch.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.begin2search.com/googlesidesearch.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {C457A708-6799-153B-B6B1-42B6DFE22AC2} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Enatij] C:\WINDOWS\system32\RACLE~1\POOLSV~1.EXE
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: {5526B4C6-63D6-41A1-9783-0FABF529859A} - http://cabs.elitemediagroup.net/cabs/mediaview.cab
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: iexplore.dll chkntfs.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Reinstall - C:\WINDOWS\system32\q068laju1do8.dll (file missing)

2. After checking these items CLOSE ALL open windows EXCEPT HijackThis and click "Fix Checked." Then, reboot your computer...

Reboot back into Normal mode

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_07-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Let me know how everything is running. Go ahead and post one final Hijackthis log.

The first time I ran killbox, it produced an error and quit, but the second time it went through fine, but never asked me to reboot (which is okay since I didn't want to any way). The only file it said existed was the RACLE~1, the others didn't exist.
When I was fixing checked with HijackThis, it produced an error:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: iexplore.dll chkntfs.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2600.0000
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

But the rest of the fixing went okay.

The java I downloaded was update 8.

This is the new HijackThis log:

Let see what you have in Add/Remove programs!!!

Open Hijackthis, Click Open the Misc tools section Then click the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
The Add/Remove Programs Manager panel should appear.
In this panel click the Save list button.
Save the uninstall_list.txt file to your desktop and copy and paste the contents back in your next reply.

Yes and it looks like you have uninstalled AOL. So you can fix this in Hijackthis

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar search - res://C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:
1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
3. Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
4. Click "OK".
5. Click the "More Options" Tab.
6. Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.
How to Create a Restore Point.
How to use Cleanmgr.

Go ahead and install all updates from Microsoft, includeing Service Pack 2. Make sure you make a fresh System Restore Point before you update to Service Pack 2. This is just a precaution, i have never had any problems installing Service Pack 2. Even after having an infection like yours. Please keep me up to date on how everthing is going. I will leave your thread as is until you have finished with upgrading to Service pack 2.

Thanks for all your help!
It took me two tries to install SP2 (the first time it said it was already
downloaded and the install failed, but the second time it re-downloaded
and installed just fine) and then I had to install other updates, but
I am finally done!!!
I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to mention the CastleCops forum in my post at windows support forums. In the time it took you to help me
repair all my system's unholy broken-ness, I did not get even one reply
to my post for help there! Maybe some other poor fools like me will
see ya'll there and come get some real help!

Thanks so much for all your time; I hope I never need your help again! Shocked

No, really, ya'll are my heroes! Wink
