First, thanks for all your help so far. It seems that a number of things were found and fixed. So far no surprise windows popping up in FireFox anyway. Smile

One visible issue is that my wife's Desktop still changes from her background picture to solid blue shortly after logging in. Any idea what is causing that?

Also, Norton's Phishing filter won't turn on but I've had to fix that in the past (wonder if one of the "registry fixes" removed my fix, which does involve editing the registry).

After sending the last set of logs, I fixed Norton and had it do a scan - it found one tracking cookie which I removed. Then I ran Spybot S&D. It found a couple of serious looking problems. One was a Virtuemonde (sp) DLL that had a different name (random characters followed by _old.dll, or something like that). Also, the security center was disabled. I had it fix these and remove a bunch of tracking cookies.

Here's the current HJT report.

Thanks - Jim

One visible issue is that my wife's Desktop still changes from her background picture to solid blue shortly after logging in. Any idea what is causing that?
You need to open a new topic in the Windows forum. The issue on your wife's pc needs to be treated on it's own, as a separate matter.

It sounds like the pc is getting a fatal STOP code exception, also known as, a blue screen of death ( BSOD ). Unless it's only a blue background whithout any Windows STOP codes.

p.s. will get back to "your" issues after a bit.

With the exception of PartyPoker, Bodog poker and Titan poker (I'm skeptical as to safety of sites I don't know of ), your HijackThis log look ok.
However, after the mention that you'd find some suspects as Virtumonde, we need to run some other tools.
>
This pc needs the latest version of Java runtime. Uninstall the following older versions of Java runtime:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 {any version}
Java(TM) 6 Update {any version}
) via Add/Remove Programs. After uninstalling, reboot if directed to do so.

In Windows Explorer, navigate to and delete C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found.

    Arrow Do NOT delete C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!
Open an IE window and go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp > In the middle of the page, click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6> If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content;
Arrow You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control
> Accept the license agreement
> Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and Save the file to your desktop; do not Run it.

When the download is complete, close all browser windows and double-click on the saved file to install the update.
  • Tip: Choose Custom install to select only the part(s) you need/want.
Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if prompted to do so.

If you were /not/ prompted to reboot, please do so now.
=
If you ever used Vundofix or Combofix or Smitfraudfix tools before this, delete them now!

You will want to print this section for easy offline reference or perhaps save it to your system in a Notepad file.

ArrowNote: the following code was created specifically for member jcrotinger.
If you are not this member, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Exclamation Delete any prior copy of ComboFix and download a fresh copy.

Download and SAVE ComboFix to your Desktop Do NOT run the program straight away from download.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and SAVE it to your Desktop.
For information regarding this download,
please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

> Please download AND SAVE to your Desktop SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
    Arrow Don't download SmitfraudFix until you're ready to run/use it. It's very important that you be using the most recent version. Current version is ver 2.320 or later
.

> Please download and SAVE VundoFix to your desktop. Current version is ver 7

Next, disconnect this pc from the internet. Disconnect a connection from this computer's modem, network card, or the connection to your router {if using one}.

Remove Smitfraud and Vundo
Exclamation You will want to print out or copy these instructions to Notepad for Safe Mode/offline reference!

> Reboot into Safe Mode (Restart your computer, then continually tap F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter. More at http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406.)

>. Once in Safe Mode, double-click smitfraudfix.exe

>. Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and pressing Enter to delete infected files.

> You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" Answer "Yes" by typing Y and pressing Enter in order to remove the desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

> The tool will then check if wininet.dll is infected. If prompted to replace the infected file (if found), answer "Yes" by typing Y and pressing Enter.

> The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process, restart to safe mode when it does; if it doesn't, please manually restart in safe mode.

> A text file will appear onscreen with results from the cleaning process. I shall want to see these results. A copy of the report will be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.
    Exclamation process.exe, a file installed by SmitFraudFix, is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. More on this at http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
Vundofix
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

A file will be automatically created as C:\vundofix.txt. I'll need to see this file in your next post, please.

Note: You can reboot to normal mode now.
>
Important: Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
Double click Combo-Fix.exe on your Desktop to start it.

  • A window may open with a warning. Type "1" (and Enter) to start the fix. When the scan completes Notepad will open with with your results log open. Do a File, Exit and answer 'Yes' to save changes.
A caution - Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled.
If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light.
If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

A file will be created at => C:\Combofix.txt.

Once Complete, logoff & retstart Windows Exclamation

Re-enable your antivirus if you had disabled it.
Reconnect your pc to the internet.

> Run Hijackthis and save the log
With all windows/browsers/applications closed, run Hijackthis and save the log.

Post back
Please post back with the following: [list]-Contents of C:\rapport.txt;
-Contents of C:\vundofix.txt;
-The Combofix report;
-New hijackthis log;
-Tell us, How are things now Question
Since these will be quite lengthy reports that would not fit in a single response, you need to do a PREVIEW before pressing Submit button. I would even suggest you post each report in a separate reply.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks - I'll get started.

Note that my wife used the computer this morning for email, web browsing, etc., and ended up hanging firefox and IE. After a hard shutdown and rebooting I ran Spybot S&D and discovered a number of registry changes, including the security center being disabled again and a number of things that I had removed earlier, such as a Smitfraud-C, as they were considered in the no-good camp. I didn't have it clean anything this time but the log is below...

Regards - Jim
