This annoys me to no end!
I was so happy I found this thread, but Norton/Symantec has apparently taken measures to ensure that it won't work everywhere
I have Norton Internet Security 2005, I moved the folder to "Security" under all users. Of course I started getting the annoying "Does not support repair" install thing.
I changed:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Shortcutpath
AND
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SymSetup\Internet Security\ShortcutPath
To point to the correct path, but alas, it does not work :'(
I phoned Symantec, and I'm SURE they didn't understand a word I was saying - the nice lady said she would send me a link to a document on their site, but I haven't received anything.
Has anyone else has success with NIS2005? I don't have Office installed (well I have Open Office, not MS office!), so I only get this when I boot the machine...
FYI running english XP pro... _________________ <b><i>Any technology distinguishable from magic, is insufficiently advanced.</i></b>

I got stubborn and starting looking through the registry.
I found two keys, this might be because I've upgraded from an earlier version of NIS, uninstalled and installed again.
Anyway I found (note I broke the lines):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer
\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\2FF93E8AB5F37EC4A8DF0AE79FD6465F
with the string value:
06E9C39A6B92ad94AB127FA06CAAED02 = (my old path)
and:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer
\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\932EEA56C5A47C8499E284F46ACC2016
with the string value:
FC6B5F6CC906E82478F6AC3871C620B1 = (my old path)
I changed them both, rebooted, and it was fixed
Ok, so if you are having the same problem, locate the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData
highlight it, press CTRL+F, search for "Programs\Norton" without the quotes, and you should find the key, change the string value that it contains - there are no other values in it. Do this until you find no more in that registry path.
That should take care of it. _________________ <b><i>Any technology distinguishable from magic, is insufficiently advanced.</i></b>

I'm so glad Google led me to this forum -- you guys rule. I just ran into this problem and thought for sure it couldn't be as stupid as a change of a program folder -- guess I was wrong. Thanks for the regedits Bill -- worked like a charm.
Symantec is really reaching on this one -- I've been using Norton since the first Windows 95 release, but it's bullshit like this that is enough to make longtime advanced users drop a whole product line.
Thanks again!

|
|
I read a fix to this error somewhere on this forum but I had to do further fixes to get mine working smoothly again. Others will probably be going through the same things I did, so here is the fix for Symantec Norton SystemWorks giving me the error on startup: Norton Antivirus Does Not Support The Repair Feature. Please Uninstall and Reinstall.
1 - Back up your registry:
Click Start > Run, type regedit
Go to File > Export
Name your registry backup file and remember where you save it.
2. Make a System Restore point:
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select "Create a restore point" and follow the on screen instructions.
Now for the tricky bit.. be VERY CAREFUL editing your registry keys and DOUBLE CHECK ALL PATHS!!!
Right Click on the START button, select Explore all users. Make a note of where in the windows explorer tree you have your systemworks folder (highlight the path in the address bar and copy it to your computer clipboard. You will need to enter this path MULTIPLE TIMES into the registry!)
In RegEdit, click Edit > Find
Search for all instances of:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Norton SystemWorks\
Change the value whenever found to the path you have copied to your clipboard. MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE THE TRAILING BACKSLASH!
You will find some keys which are named to match your old systemworks location. In these instances, DO NOT CHANGE THE VALUE OF THE KEYS! Instead, right click on the key and choose "Rename". Change the NAME of the key to reflect the correct location in the start menu.
When you are done, close RegEdit, exit the explorer window and restart. You should get no further installer errors. If you should encounter errors resulting from your registry editing, restart your computer, at your bootup screen, press F8 to get to your boot menu. Choose Safe Mode and once booted in safe mode, double click on your registry backup and follow the instructions to restore your registry, then go back into your system restore utility and restore your system to the previous restore point that you created before you began your registry work.... if this needs to be done, you either skipped a step, didn't read the instructions fully or messed it up in some other way. I did this fix and it worked perfectly for me - not a single error message on startup now!

I am new on this forum and this time just wanted to say thank you for all of the ideas listed on this forum.
I had this error message with Win XP and Norton Antivirus 2005 during Windows startup. I tried each trick you mentioned here and finally the tip from Daath worked only. It is strange why the others did not work, but now it is over...
Thanks again for everybody!!!

Hi,
I just bought a Gateway 4540 notebook and I've been getting the same error message every time I boot up the computer. I haven't moved any files or changed anything on the Start menu, so I don't think the problem is being caused by the same thing that everyone here seems to have done. I also wouldn't be able to uninstall and then reinstall because I didn't purchase Norton AntiVirus software; it was loaded onto the laptop and I don't have an NAV CD or anything... any insights into other fixes?
Thanks in advance!

| bill_bright wrote: | There is an easy solution to this if you are comfortable editing the Registry. There are also 2 workarounds that may work fine for you. If you don't feel comfortable editing the Registry, then I recommend you choose one of these 2 options.
(1) Norton's way - Move the shortcuts back to their original location in your Start Menu. See the link above to determine where that should be. It is based on whether your NAV2005 came packaged as stand-alone, with NIS, or with SystemWorks. Instructions are included to move, or recreate the shortcuts where they want them.
(2) Open the Norton AntiVirus Options menu and select Miscellaneous and uncheck Enable Office Plug-in. This, of course, disables NAV2005's ability to scan Office documents when you open them - a key feature of an AV program, IMO. The hazard with disabling this feature is NAV2005 will not automatically scan Office documents you download, copy from another computer, or media (floppy, CD) or save off as an attachment. You will have to remember to scan the file manually. |
I actually did try the regedit method of taking care of this problem which seem's to work for basically everyone that replied to the post with "Thanks!" but for whatever odd reason this did not work for me. After taking a minute to calm myself from beatin' on my brand new customize built computer I came up with the idea to make both me and Norton Antivirus happy. Using this method you do not need regedit edit, infact all you use is your keyboard, mouse, and Windows.
Step 1: Right click on the Start Menu and press Explore All Users.
Step 2: Under the Start Menu subfolder click the Programs, inside this directory make a new folder named Norton Antivirus.
Step 3: Once the "Norton Antivirus" folder is created right click on the folder and press "Properties".
Step 4: A window named "Norton Antivirus Properties" should popup, look at the bottom of the property settings and make sure that the checkbox Hidden is checked.
Note: The problem should be solved, if you still see the folder "Norton Antivirus" in the Programs submenu then you are showing hidden files. If hidden files are set to show in the future you will be able to see the blank folder.
