Hiya Mister2
Glad to know you have not left the country
No problem, as you say, I too am not going anywhere.
Parrot's life not being so bad ........ don't you believe it, that's why so many end up in rescue, some of which are diabolical.
Don't work too hard.

I have found several instances where the Norton LiveUpdate process can cause problems and may need to be repaired. Try this to see if you get back to normal running speed:
Double click the Norton icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen). On the 'Antivirus' tab or the 'Internet Security' tab you should see an entry for Basic Security. Click 'LiveUpdate' then click 'Turn Off'. You should be given a choice for how long you want to turn LiveUpdate off - choose 1 hour (or an option similar to this period) and click OK. Reboot your system and check the speed.
If this makes little or no difference then repeat the above procedure but turn LiveUpdate back on. Hopefully it will have some effect and we can look at repairing it. If not then at least we have eliminated another thing from the list of possible causes. _________________ Never stop learning

Hi Mister2
Is the forum playing up? I posted a reply to you earlier today, pressed submit and it didn't seem to work. I couldn't log out so just closed link, tried to get back in but couldn't.
Anyway, I did as you said and yes the computer booted up a lot quicker.
How's the cat these days lol.
Best Wishes
Lorraine

Wow, you want me to be up all night do you ha ha ha. What you want me to do looks very interesting. I will copy and paste your instructions before I start.
Hopefully, I won't be climbing the walls so I can report back tomorrow ....... fingers and everything else crossed including the birds eyes. Awww bless them. I really do appreciate all your help.
No, it wasn't Crucial, you gave me eBuyer. Costing £13 something inc postage. It should be here by Friday.
I don't think I will start this tonight as they birds are going to bed in half an hour. I will do it first thing tom.
Night night,
Lorraine
| Mister2 wrote: | Well, at least you proved that is the correct folder as it is in use. I suggest trying the following:
- Follow Step 1 of the procedure
- Now run Process Explorer. Look in the Process column for AluSchedulerSvc.exe, AUPDATE.EXE and LuComServer_3_4.EXE. For each case (there may be 2 instances of that last process running) right click the process name in the left hand column and select 'Kill Process Tree'.
- When those processes have stopped - you may have to wait a minute or so while they shut down - close Process Explorer and continue with Step 5 ( you already did Steps 2 to 4). When you find the LiveUpdate folder in C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec, stop the search, right click on the folder in the Search window, choose Rename and change the name to ZZLiveUpdate. Now you will only have to rename it back if anything goes wrong - which it won't .
- Run the lusetup.exe file as in Step 6 and continue with the rest of the procedure.
If you still have problems then try doing the above in Safe Mode (either keep pressing the F8 key as you boot up or else use the Start, Run, msconfig trick you used earlier). I would expect this to be unnecessary as killing the Live Update processes in normal mode should do the trick.
Fingers crossed!
EDIT
If you went to Crucial, I bet that memory stick arrives tomorrow! |

You're right to defer that procedure until you have more time - once started it's got to be finished. If that doesn't release the folder then we will have to get a little more aggressive. Don't worry - the parrots won't need ear muffs! _________________ Never stop learning

Hi Mister2,
I did the above but can only find AluSchedulerSvc.exe I have attached the results from Process Explorer for you to see. I didn't kill it until you confirm I still have to.

Ah, I should have figured that out myself!
Yes - right click and kill the AluSchedulerSvc.exe process and see if that releases the folder.
I hope your parrots aren't picking any of this up:
"Right click and kill, abort, backup and boot it ...".
The vicar would be most surprised! _________________ Never stop learning

| greyfeathers wrote: | | Don't know if it's right though. I now have two Live Update folders ... | That is correct. The one beginning with 'ZZ' is the old one that I wanted to keep as a backup. Norton will be looking for the file named simply 'LiveUpdate' (the new file). The 'ZZ' file is effectively hidden from Norton and so will not do any harm - I'd like to keep it there while we get sorted out, then we can remove it.
| greyfeathers wrote: | | I tried to copy the Product.Inventory.LiveUpdate back but it wouldn't let me. Sooooo, I still have the copy on my desktop, shall I delete that too ? | No, not yet - the copy you have on your desktop is Norton's way of backing up the file before re-installing.
Do the following and I can check out the search results:
- Highlight the command in bold below, right click and select Copy:
dir c:\*liveupdate* /s > c:\search.txt
- Click Start, Run, type cmd in the text box and click OK. You will see a black screen with the line 'C:\Documents and Settings\username>' with a flashing cursor at the end
- Right click next to the flashing cursor and select Paste, then press Enter (it will appear that nothing is happening, but it is).
- When you see the 'C:\Documents and Settings\username>' line pop back, type exit and press Enter to close the window.
- Attach the file named search.txt to your next post (just type c:\search.txt in the 'Filename' box for the attachment instead of using the 'Browse' button, then click Add Attachment).
When we get this sorted, the booting up time should improve.
As for plumbing, I can usually tell when something's gone wrong but then I shout somebody to fix it! _________________ Never stop learning

Hiya Mister2,
Didn't expect an answer today (Sunday).
I will do as you instruct.
Bye for now
