OK, a couple of points:

1) have you tried booting with hte PM disc to see what is the partition structures, and see if all the changes that you applied last time were actually implemented?

2) Has the new partition ever been usable? If so, did you copy any data to it? How large did you make it? How many partitions did you make? Is it / are they Primary partitions or extended partitions, or a mix of both?

3) Have you tried booting into safe mode? Have you used your XP CD's recovery console? Have you installed any new service packs either before or after the partitioning? Have you tried an in-place install of XP over itself to get it booting?

the partition was only made the other day, it was never used but im not sure if it was even made as there was an error when partition magic was trying to make the partition and so now all it does it restarts.

Honestly, you're more than likely to lose it again this time - it *sounds* like Partition Magic was in the process of resizing the partition and hosed the system partition in the process....

I know there is a process for repairing the boot file (which don't seem to be the problem here) using a *nix disc, but let me look for it....

That will happen because XP was set up on your grandfathers machine, and if it is not nearly identical to yours in terms of motherboard and other hardware, then it will not boot - just go back and reboot itself. I know that one from personal experience.

but its worked before no problem, windows just had to reconfigure itself for the new hard ware, but im going to get a small hard drive and install windows 98 on it and work from that instead of booting to a cd all the time

Windows 98 may not be able to read NTFS discs, which is the default file system used by XP on new installs.

ok i took one of my old 8 or 10 gig hard drives and installed xp but did not activate just so i could use it to try and fix my computer and for a little bit it was trying to run check disk on my main hard drive but i would stop it, well i decided to try and fix my mbr and some other stuff and i restarted and decided to let the check disk to run and now my computer is back to normal and am currently backing up files on to blank dvds and also im saving money for a bigger internal hard drive for future backups etc so that problem is fixed and i am also following a guide to install the windows xp recovery console so that if this ever happens again and i cant find my xp cd i will have it, so thanks for the help on that one and i would still like the names of any other programs people may know about and use to do back ups
