Good point. Neither do I.

I agree!
A "Regular Expressions as filters: Tips and suggestions" forum here on Computercops in the Firetrust section, would be great!
You all have document some really great ideas in these threads. It would be so much better, if they could be "saved" in an obvious place for others to use as reference months or years from now when this particular thread is buried deep behind newer threads.

I have posted the regexpr files as you suggested. The link is http://www.lmphotonics.com/forum/files.php?action=category&id=6
denn988 Yes, I do not understand why the escaped space is necessary, but I found a situation where the regular expression under discussion did not work on a mailwasher message, but when I escaped it, it worked fine. - it worked OK eitherway in the test software.
If it doesnot do any harm, and it picks up some more spam, then I would add it!
I am interested in any thories as to why it did not work with the unescaped space.
Best regards,

Best regards, |
Marke,
I am aware of a few weaknesses with the Regular Expression engine used by WMP, the biggest one I can think of right off hand involves a problem in certain circumstances when nesting expressions within layers of ()s.
I am sure there are others that I am not aware of, as most of the problems will not show up in the more simple expressions that most people would use. When the more complex expressions are written, it can cause underlying 'bugs' to become apparent. That may be what happened with your expression.
For the most part, escaping a 'space' should not be required, and if it is, you should examine what is happenning as closely as possible in the hope of finding the underlying 'bug' that is causing that. If you find it and understand it, you will be able to write better expressions in the future, because you will know the limitaions of the engine. That is always a good thing to know.

Indeed. And of course let us all know what you found Marke. We also want to know how to deal with the limitation as well!
