My boy is a physicist.
He uses Linux.
He and I have had extensive discussions of Linux.
I install Linux on computers I "give" to people/organizations who would not otherwise be able to afford them.
I will be using Linux's version of Powerpoint(TM-MS) for my lectures this summer and following.
Please consider the following link. Consider, if you would, the column, "target audience".

We run our computers (4) on SuSE here, it is great on the desktop with all the bundled applications it meets all our needs except for a good replacement for our mapping program on windows and MailWasher. We have one junk box with Windows 2k for running stuff that has to have windows, it is headless and accessed by VNC over our LAN.
We looked at the Novel desktop distro as well as their server and found we can accomplish more with SuSe without the restrictions of the desktop edition or the expense of the server.
