New computer with Vista. Can you downgrade to Windows XP?

It seems you can't find anything in the stores anymore without Vista on it. How feasible is it to unload Vista and load Windows XP Pro?

Could you load XP Pro overtop of Vista or would you need to wipe off the hard drive and reload everything?

You have to wipe the hard drive and install XP fresh. You can't do a direct "downgrade" of Vista by installing XP over the Vista install.

PC Bruiser is right. Whatever the OEMs put on the puter & one has to downgrade, with Vista, the downgrade, by wiping/reformatting the HD puts it back to Vista Basic.

I happen to like Vista Premium. I jumped from ME past 2000, XP, et al, right to Vista. I love the colors, etc, but I had to use the "classic" start menu for a while. Now I'm used to the Vista menu & haven't had probs since.

Also, I knew in the back of my mind somewhere that ATI & AMD merged, but wasn't thinking about it because I was on another site & people were starting to drive me nuts, so I logged off. The ATI update was in Windows Update, so I DLed it. I should have got a white paper first, but again so busy I wasn't thinking properly Confused

I DLed this "optional" upgrade, because I thought it might be for other HW on my PC, but it threw my LCD Analogue monitor into Digital, so after I rebooted, I couldn't see a darn thing, but I knew it was booting properly in the background. Sad

I had to have my HD reformatted which took a few days. That was OK though, cause I needed a break. Now as you all can see I'm fine & only cost me a tad over $60.00 (CAN). It sure reminds one not to blindly DL anything "optional" in Windows Update.

I have used Copy commander and System Commander by www.v-com.com to work on hard drives if I want to install a new OS. You can use either of these programs to literally clean a HD by removing the partition and starting fresh. Each program has a "partition commander" on it and you can leave a partition blank or format it into whatever flavor you like, even UNIX if you want. Either programs can be burned on CD and you can use them to "boot up" and then do whatever you want. Copy commander let's you copy one hard drive to another, and works best with a un partitioned drive. It will move over , resize, and adjust the files/folder size for a newer BIGGER drive. However it can also create a "clean" hard drive for you to do a new install onto.
