Let's put the FUN back into DysFUNction at CastleCops Religious Forum!

How about a harmless little game of religious trivial pursuit?

Maybe we can all learn some unexpected little bits of Trivia about Religion?

Is it ok if I go 1st with a question?

ok here goes.

Which Movement or Individual was responsible for reorganizing the Ku Klux Klan in the United States of America in the early 1900's?

The person who answers the question correctly gets to pose the next question.

Hi JoAnn,

It's not clear how your question about the Ku Klux Klan relates to religion.

You may be interested in knowing that the Klan was anti-Catholic. Some sources indicate that the Klan was so before it was anti-black.

Here you can find the details of a confrontation between Catholics and the Klan early in the twentieth century:

Quote:
Plans are in the works by local historians to dedicate a memorial later this month to the mostly Catholic residents who stood up to turn fire hoses on the 400 armed Klansmen who marched through their town.

The interlopers burned crosses on a hill overlooking Lilly in hopes of advancing Protestant supremacy.

Details of the memorial dedication ceremony will be announced within weeks, said Lilly resident Jim Salony, who has spearheaded the project.

“The Klan was a growing force in this area. And – unlike the Klan in the South, where they were against blacks – here they were against immigrants,” said Salony, a retired college professor and local historian.

A secondary reason for the Klansmen to try to intimidate the locals may be because Lilly was a stronghold for the United Mine Workers.

The April 5 confrontation was viewed as a turning point in Klan organizing, which had penetrated Johnstown and Altoona and was headed north.

“Lilly’s resistance to the Klan’s demonstration proved to be the beginning of the end of the Klan’s advance into northeastern United States,” Salony said. “After that, we started to see a decline.”

In that Lilly encounter, three men died of gunshot wounds and at least 20 men were injured.

Is mine the correct answer to your question?

Quote:
“This was planned months ahead of time,” Conrad said Friday. “It really was because of religion. Lilly was 90 percent Catholic.”

The hate doctrine of the Ku Klux Klan of the 1800s, with opposition to blacks and Jews, moved into more northern states starting about 1915.

And in the north, the hatred turned toward the mostly Irish and Italian immigrants and their religion, Conrad said.

Hi k027,

I think it's pretty clear how the Ku Klux Klan relates to religion. (There are other "trivial" facts about how the kkk is related (thorough misinterpretations of the Bible & so on) to the "religions of Love" too) What I am flabbergasted about is how modern day atrocities are NOT seen (by some) to be related to religion.

I guess I wanted to see how many other people realized this fact too?

You are correct imho & it's Your turn to pose the next question.

Congratulations!

Love & Peace, heart heart

Oh! Oh! Pick me, pick me!.....

[quote=About.comToday the KKK has been greatly weakened as their views have become more and more radical. They consider themselves a Christian organization and base their doctrines upon their own reading of the Bible. Their theology is strongly influenced by Christian Reconstructionism - they hope to "reconstruct" the United States along biblical (primarily Old Testament) lines and to establish a white-dominated theocracy.[/quote]

Hah..wrong! It's John 11:35, "Jesus swept." It was right after the wedding at Canaan. Oh wait. No, you're right...just rechecked ....it is, indeed "Jesus wept". But it was probably from a dust mote in his/her eye from sweeping up after the wedding at Canaan. After all, a God which is immutable could hardly express emotion.

Wait, though. The OT God(s) Yahweh / Yahweh Sabaoth / Elohim / Eloah / El / El Shaddai / El Elyon / El Olam / El Berith / El Roi / Adonai and Baal certainly were capable of expressing emotion. How that squares with "immutable" (unchanging) is beyond me. And Jesus did get somewhat perturbed with the moneychangers at the temple. And of course there's the wrath of God, jealousy, hate, the laughing God of Psalms, etc. All sorts of emotions. In fact God would appear to be somewhat of an emotional wreck when you extrapolate the time frame of the bible into eternity. How can God even function? Bipolar? Not beyond reason.
Good thing God is a fictional character. I would hate to be dependant on an emotional roller coaster. Immutable indeed.

But I digress. I'll have to come up with a tougher nut to crack. How about......for the Golden Calf......can you name the Jewish and Islamic philosophers (one of each) who had a strong influence on medieval Christian thinkers?

Hi Pat,

Hmmm, I'll have to think about this some. Off the top o my head, I misunderstood the question? I was thinking You meant the philosophers who influenced medieval Christian thinkers, meaning mainly the Greek ones? Like Plato, Aristotle, Philo of Alexandria & Ptolemy & more? But You say Jewish and Islamic philosophers & that I will have to think about some more. & I know he came after the time period You're speaking about but alot of it seems inspired by the the Marquis de Sade.

Good question tho.

& Immutable? How can anything be more "off-key" than for the Universe to remain unchanged? Sounds like more of the same (paternalistic) & paranoiac trash to me. Not very cosmic debris(ish) either. Afraid of their own shadows I suppose.

Love & Peace, heart heart

Is the following OK JACQ, since it is your's & CC's thread now.

Which Church is responsible for how "Christianity" has all gone wrong lately? You can put YOUR opinion or anyone else for that matter I'm not gonna judge or be hippocritical either, but whomever gets what I'm thinking gets to pose the next question.

Take Care & R, L & Peace! beam me up

Hey Jo. I'm thinking of one particular Jewish fellow (hint - named after one of the patriarchs), and one particular Islamic philosopher (hint - has an aka). Both influenced medieval Christian thinkers.

Hello David...the answer to your poser has to be the Church of Rome, my old alma mater. Tho I'm not sure how "lately" fits the mold.

Wikipedia wrote:
Over time, schisms have disrupted the unity of Christianity. The major divisions occurred in 318 with Arianism, in 1054 the East-West Schism of the Roman Catholic Church with the Eastern Orthodox Church and in 1517 with the Protestant Reformation.

But there is that "lately". The only "lately" that I can come up with is the Christian Right, tho they are not exactly a church.

Since the fall of godless communism, the CR has trained their sights on sexual minorities and abortion in their drive to instill fear in the less educated and thereby raise the filthy lucre they require to unite church and state, inflict their "moral values" on you, me and your Aunt Tilley's dog,, and ultimately, to replace democracy with theocracy (like Iran).
