I just installed Norton Internet Security 2005...it is great...with the help of the Norton Support on trojans and CastleCops, I got rid of the sneaky offenders. I like the reports it offer and the protection and alerts. I have at least some idea what is trying to get into my computer now. While I am at it... i think that a combination of Hijacker...the Shredder...and my antiadware....and great support from CastleCops...there is a chance to move about the internet with some degree of assurance.

I agree with the low rating, but only because McAffee does not support any of their software anymore. I had several instances of getting infected because my subscription ran out, without any advance notice.

Also, I had the same problem of having the software freeze up (2003 version) and being told to buy new software when I also had 5 or 6 months to go in my subscription.

Furthermore, even running autoupdate every day, a few viruses slipped by that the software was not able to fix automatically.

Without Castlecops help, I would''nt even be typing this..........

To make a long story short, McAffee has lost my business for the forseeable future, primarily because of their lousy SERVICE.

Symantec has done an outstanding job of hiding any reference packaged with their products (Personal Firewall, System Works, and Antivirus) to any phone numbers other than those were the caller is charged for talking to someone. I had their System Works fail on me. It not only did not function as protection, but slowed all web work to a crawl. After much work I did get someone on the phone. They told me that my version was no longer supported. ‘You’ll have to upgrade even though the subscription you paid for updates has 6 months to go before expiring.’

Customer support = 0

I uninstalled. Not all components were removed!@! Never the less, I was able to reinstall and the ‘no-longer supported software worked fine. I think Symantec is in a tailspin.

What AV/Firewall should I switch to? McAfee? How can I get all the Symantec junk off my PC after I uninstall?

This poster who said {regarding NAV}:
Expensive and not that effective -- why pay money to slow your computer to a crawl.

Huh ?? You can get NAV 2004 after rebates for nothing. Speed depends on what you try to run NAV on. If you try to run ANY modern AV on a slow machine, unless you use an older lighter version of NAV {say, 2001 or 2002}, you are liable to notice some hit on resources. So far as effective goes, I have tested NAV on about a Gigabyte of samples, and I can testify it has excellent detection despite the false claims to the contrary. Much of the criticism of NAV stems from ill-founded prejudice by people who have not tested the AV in a fair and unbiased test with their own sample collection. Just my humble opinion. Thanks! :-D
