Norton AntiVirus Posted by avd21 on 2007-04-04 09:58:43 My Score:
Norton''s 2007 version finally seems like they took care of the code bloat... some of the reviews are saying 33% faster.
At any rate my computer is running much faster now with the new version of Norton Antivirus than with the old version. :)

Norton AntiVirus Posted by fangio-of-systems on 2005-01-27 18:09:48 My Score:
Norton is simply a poorly designed product. I would never recomend it. It has the ability to let viruses and trojans pass through a current date definition file. About system resources, I don''t think its something to worry about, PCs can take it now a days. The main thing is the way the product was made. For Servers and business client stations, I use McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise Edition. For home PCs I''d use just the Anti-Virus and not the security suite. The Anti-Spyware and Firewall products for home users are still not made right. The best thing to do is avoid poor coded programs such as Norton (Not Symantec in general) and use the other industry standard McAfee (Virus Scan by it self... no security suite) up to date at all times and setup to do a full system scan at least once a week. Speed? This thing is fast. But then again, it depends mostly on hardware.

@decado: You said you were running NAV 2003 and that Panda ActiveScan {the online scan} found some trojans that NAV missed. Bear in mind that many AVs give trojanlike names to adware and spyware. Only NAV 2004 and higher detect adware and spyware as Expanded Threats -- earlier versions of NAV do not have the engine to detect those malware even though they are in NAV''s database. Names like TrojanDownloader.xx or Backdoor.Agent.yy are a dead giveaway for adware-spyware, they are *NOT* real trojans even though AVs give them such names. Make sure you are not confusing apples with oranges there; I bet you Panda detected some spyware {not trojans} which was not detected by your NAV03 because it was too early a version {engine} to detect it.
@ScottieMeBoy: Password Manager is an optional component of Norton SystemWorks 2004, and in fact it is not installed by default in NSW 2005. Even with NSW 2004 you can do a custom install, or you can go to Add/Remove and do a maintenance install, and choose only the components you want to run on your box. You don''t have to run Password Manager if you don''t want to.
I have had little or no problems with my Norton software and think it is very good, and reasonably priced .. JMHO, each to his own. ;-)

have Norton internet security on computor, with no problem, never a virus.
scan takes almost an hour, though.
the firewall hides everything on several online test.
for 30 us dollar, which is getting cheaper and cheaper :), you get upgrade for a year.

If you are not content with the speed of your AV, you could give NOD32 a try. Its core is written in assembler, thus it''s incredibly fast not only on top computers and has the best heuristics I''ve ever seen.

Norton Anti Virus 2000 can no longer be renewed, you have to purchase an upgrade.
NAV and NIS are dogs. They are OK on a top PC with hordes of memory, other that that, don''t go near them. NAV will just slow your PC down, and it''s damn hard to get rid of, in fact symantec basically acknowledge this by creating tools that uninstall it! (RNAV, RNIS)
My workshop PC running NAV03 (as a test) has just had 3 trojans removed by a pandasoftware online scan, these are trojans that got through norton and then wern''t picked up on a scan. Go figure.

Norton AntiVirus Posted by ScottieMeBoy on 2004-12-10 21:43:29 My Score:
Doesn''t change the fact that it uses a LOT of resources and installs a plethora of stuff in the registry. Shut down for five DAYS and it''s still there. And it is NOT the ''best'' AV program out there; if it WAS the best I wouldn''t have had to contact them to recover my PC from a trojan that ''snuck in'', as the tech put it. How cute! The support really is terrible...IF you get through and pay your $40 to talk to a tech you MAY get your problem solved...or use their FREE ''Virtual Agent'' and take your chances. And, they lost my rebate submission, so the ''deals'' you find that make it appear a ''steal'' aren''t there. Hmm, pay $60 for SystemWorks or $50 for NAV, which is better? $10 for a suite with tools that don''t work on XP; try running Disk Doctor on an XP system. Shut down all you want; nothing.
That''s what this is: nothing. Glad it kicks butt for you, though, whatever that means....I just want it to screen for viruses. I don''t need a product that kicks butt. But it has a ''Password Manager'' ! But, then, there''s another 20-40 mb of RAM and a hundred registry entries. Right now, I can''t use the email virus scanner because of a tech issue. But, they''re working on it.

After looking over the Ratings given for Norton-Symantec Products...I''m SHOCKED! Seems to ME ~> YES, There NEEDS to be some EASIER Explaination on USE of their products... OR ~> Many Computer systems HAVE FAULTS on their HARD DRIVES that have NOT BEEN FIXED and UPDATES for WINDOWS has NOT BEEN PERFORMED (For the OPERATING SYSTEMS!!)!!!
IF ~> the System''s Hard Drive ERRORS ARE REPAIRED (NORTON *Disk-Doctor* AND/OR Windows *SCANDISK* CAN DO THIS}..... EVERYONE posting computer problems here would be AMAZED!
STEP 1: Windows XP IS Pretty Kewl, many Self-Repair options. NEED TO TURN IT OFF (Shut-Down, Turn it OFF) for about 5 [FIVE] Minutes..AND THEN ***TURN IT ON AGAIN***!! [This ALLOWS the Computer to FULLY Clean it''s Internal memory! (Dump it''s brain, Forget ALL and LEARN the *NEW* information that has changed!! Without Remembering ANY of the *Garbage*)
Otherwise (Except for some Win-98-Users), will have to Re-Boot their systems AT LEAST 3 (THREE) Times for Windows to PROPERLY Straighten out the Windows-Registry!!
Windows-XP does this automatically....USUALLY takes a COMPLETE *SHUT-DOWN* for enough time to allow the system''s memory to degrade to nothing (about 3-5 minutes) Before Re-Starting the computer!
THEN~> Re-Starting the Computer WILL ~>> LOAD THE NEW-UPDATED-INFORMATION/CHANGES Properly!
Norton/Symantec Products have SAVED MY A**, MANY TIMES!! I DO have some MAJOR Issues with their 2004 products. However, I am current;y using Norton System Works 2002 (Except for the FireWall, which I have no need for...now that I''m using DSL and with Microsoft''s IE Security on a Networked System)... I have FAR Less Intrusions to worry about! My AV (Antivirus) is UP TO DATE... Kicks BUTT!!
