This is absolutely the worst purchase I have ever made, and that includes my brand-new 1980 Triumph Spitfire and used 1966 M-G. The Customer Service is the absolute worst I have ever dealt with. The 2.5 version (newest) has so many bugs they send you add-ons that log the problems and then they ask YOU to send THEM the logs so they can fix the product. People, this is a beta version and it sucks. It changes its configurations on its own, it starts sometimes, others not, it has allowed all sorts of flotsam and jetsam through and I have had to deal with this on a daily basis. Oh, and they have a NO REFUND policy, which they are quick to tell you, so try it first! I cannot stress this enough! To the people that think this is the BEST firewall out there, either you have cracked 'the code' or you have no clue as to what you are doing. I would not use this for free, or if I were paid to use it for evaluation purposes. And just wait until you send your first support call: their pat answer? Turn off your Anti-Virus software and then run your computer.....as if!?!?! The worst, worse than my first marriage. Please, go elsewhere.

''To the people that think this is the BEST firewall out there, either you have cracked ''the code'' or you have no clue as to what you are doing.''

''Cracked the code''??? You mean that if you can''t get a program for free then the program is no good?!!

I smell a ''script kiddy'' here! :-)))

I had been using Zone Alarm, and started having problems with hackers breaking into my system over my broadband connection. They were able to get through Zone Alarm (and actually turn off the firewall) within a few minutes. Sygate was even worse!

After trying several other firewalls, Outpost Pro was the ONLY one they could not get through!

You guys may like cute interfaces and all, but the real work is in protecting your system.

Now, Outpost is the only software firewall that I have confidence in. It also seems that everyone else who has reviewed Outpost here likes it, too. Check out the other reviews: go to Reviews --> O and read on. :-)))

But they''re all looking at the application from it''s performance standpoint, not ''cute'' interfaces. So what other engineers have to say may not interest you folks. ;-)

I do agree that Initial Setup for Outpost is a pain. Especially if you don''t know what your doing. Yes, Outpost will crash out on startup if it conflicts with your antivirus or other high priority startup programs that try to access the internet. You have to make sure that you create access rules for those applications. Until you do that, you will have problems. I''ve found that when Outpost and McAfee AV fight, McAfee wins, Outpost crashes. So I setup access rules for McAfee and no more problems.

Setup hassles aside, this is by far the most powerful and flexible rules based firewall I''ve had the pleasure of using. I have yet to find a software firewall that allows the granular rules based control that outpost offers. Not to mention, for the truly paranoid, it does a wonderful job of tracking all software components for code injection and/or changes that could indicate a trojan or other nasty spy trying to access the internet through another trusted program.

This program is not the best for novices. But, if you know what your doing and your willing to put in the initial setup work. Its by far the most powerful rules based firewall out there. If you want setup ease, and less control of how your applications access the internet, then go back to zone alarm.

I give OUTPOST a ''ONE''....amazingly enough, I just yanked the whole thing out and said to h*** with it, I''d had enough....so I went back to Zone Labs FREE version......oh, momma....how nice. With all the other email filters and anti-virus things I have I don''t need the PRO version, so the FREE version is perfect.....and SOOOO easy to use.
And scanning the ports? Did better than Outpost with all of the dials at Patent Pending.
SOOO, if you are thinking about OUTHOUSE, er, OUTPOST, please, my friend, think again. Yes, there are good reviews of this product...but take it from me, honestly....what a nightmare. Wait ''til version 7.0, maybe then they will get it right.
