Norton AntiVirus

My Score:

The only AV with a very small footprint is NOD32. I installed it on 486 with 16 MB of RAM and didn''t notice almost any slowdown. Really, I''m not joking.

I toally agree with the sentiment that Norton Security products falls way below the mark when it comes to real-term security. I must admit that once I was swayed into buying their Internet Security 2004 until the following...

(1) System speed was slowed very considerably. (2) I contracted a morphing trojan that Norton alerted me to but could not remove. I then had to manually interrogate the log file and do this myself - not within the capabilities of ordinary users with less technical capabilities. (3) I tried Kaspersky Anti-Virus and it identified a plethora of viruses that had just waltzed in when using Norton without so much as an alert - even though I was updating most regularly and ran NAV 100% of the time. (4) After uninstalling Norton my registry was in a real mess, and using Nortons post-uninstall utility and following their instructions I lost all internet connectivity.

If you want a product that can be relied upon and doesn''t slug or mess up your operating system, then from my personal experience then I would VERY strongly advise a review of other security products and never to install Norton in the first place. Forget the hype and the corporate image - They were good once but nowadays a patched product that ought to give way to leaner modern technologies.

The only thing worse than wasting money on Norton Systemworks 2004 was then buying Norton Personal Firewall 2004 with the faux rebate offer that Symantec manufactures a nebulous reason for not giving you. These products give you the illusion of security until they promptly fail at the first sign of trouble then have to be reinstalled. These Norton disks make great coasters. Don''t waste your money.
