Outpost Pro is, simply put, the best pc fw I’ve tested yet. Yes, Sygate and Kerio are very good alternatives, but they don’t filter outgoing data attempts nearly as well. If you don’t believe me, try out some of the outgoing fw tests like Copycat, Firehole and Atelier’s AWFT 3.1, and you’ll see what I mean. Outpost wins hands down! Furthermore, the logging is incredibly detailed and comprehensive, the plug-ins allow you to control ads, pop-ups, active content, cookies and rogue url’s, and, unlike Sygate, you can save the fw’s configuration settings. Setting up rules is also very easy as it prompts you on the fly whenever an application wants network access for the first time.
There is an issue with Win XP’s Fast User Switching in that Outpost will sometimes block all Internet access when switching between user accounts, requiring the user to re-launch Outpost to regain access. Also, it has an issue with Webroot’s Spysweeper in that it will block all Internet access when launching Spysweeper. This can be circumvented only by de-selecting in Outpost: “Block network access if memory was modified by another process” under Options | Application | Components. Placing Spysweeper in its Trusted Zone doesn’t help. Still, these issues notwithstanding, Outpost is a first-rate pc fw.
As Rickster100 correctly pointed out in his review, NEVER run two fw’s at once. In fact, ensure you’ve only got one installed. The same goes for antivirus. Only one should be installed and used. However, to further bolster your pc’s security, I highly recommend investing in a hardware NAT router with built in firewall capabilities, such as one of the excellent offerings from D-link or Linksys. And please, for your own sake, follow at least the first five recommendations from the following link: http://www.cert.org/homeusers/HomeComputerSecurity/ ...It's excellent advice.
