First, THANKS CASTLE COPS. After watching CC for a couple of years and having taken their advice when I got hit, I would recommend the following: I use MYIE2 for a browser, I don't use most of the fancy plug-ins, but I opeted to not have the anti-popup, spyware etc. stuff run in the background. I just let it appear when something attempts to hit. When I'm out in the wild it does so relatively regularly, I note the URL and was surprised at how many times things came from the same places. Second I use Zone Alarm. Again, I do not run it in the background it appears EXACTLY when it should when a program I've installed is going OUT so I know it's doing it's job. It also appears relatively regularly when I'm out in the wild. It is a FIREWALL, and you NEED a firewall ESPECIALLY if you are downloading music etc. I would have thought that everyone would have gotten the message by now, but when you try to get something for free, you always get something extra. I installed and regularly use CW Shredder, AdAware by Lavasoft and Spybot Search and Destroy. These are after the fact operations that use different methods of finding stuff so everything gets found. I have BHO Demon running in the tray. It looks out for browser helper objects. BHOs are those dozens of things you DO have on your browser that helps it do all those nice things you like. Problem is that a lot of them phone home about everything you are doing. Last but not least, I also have Norton Antivirus and internet security. However, it is beginning to get tattered around the edges. I pay a yearly subscription and the last few months it can't seem to download it's own updates and when i've contacted them all I get is a run around. Whether the program is getting too big for what it is trying to do or what, I don't know. BUT, and this is a BIG but, it has blocked intrusions when I've been in the tame. Places I would normally trust. NOW MOST IMPORTANTLY. I suggest you do what I have done. DONATE TEN BUCKS- that's right- just ten - to EACH OF THE ABOVE. That's a total of $50. Divide that by 365 days per year and that figures out to about 12 cents per day for peace of mind. You spend that on sodas. A big salute to MYIE2, CW Shredder, AdAware, Spybot S & D and BHO DEmon! Great Job!

ZoneLabs Zone Alarm

My Score:

Its worth getting this software. Its decent on resources (RAM), and runs silently in the background. Its real-time GUI is similar to McAfee and MS Antispyware, so you know exactly what''s going on at all times. It gives you total control of the traffic coming into and out from your PC. Although some say that its a pain to TEACH Z/A, its really not. Once you have Z/A custom tailored for your activity, you''ll almost never have to fiddle with it again! Just let it run in your system tray. It even monitors your current AV program and will alert you if your virus definitions are out of date. Truely a great program! Its worth buying.
