Is AVG Free programmed to have problems connecting to the Free update Server, in order to get you to purchase it? I am asking this question because I have 3 PCs in my home office, all of them running AVG 7.0 Free. A couple of days ago, there was a notice on each PC that there was a priority update to be downloded. Each and every time on all 3 PCs (over 12 hours) , there was either no connection or it would just hang. When the download file connection box came up, it always said Server Closing . I rebooted and retried. Same problem. So, on one PC, I immediately removed and re-installed AVG Free. Same problem. On another PC, I removed AVG Free and downloaded an AVG Professional Trial. It connected to the AVG Servers and immediately upgraded. I did the same thing on another PC that had the problem. It also upgraded immediately. I went to the third PC and the AVG free could not connect to the Server. I was planning to purchase it anyhow but it makes me wonder. Otherthan that I have found it to be fast and reliable. There is no tech support for the Free version.

AVG Free

My Score:

AVG Free ... says it all. Grisoft states why some AVG Free users can''t connect for auto-updates on the sign-up/download page.

They''ve disignated a smaller Server storage for the Free version, which makes it difficult to connect when larger updates are scheduled, dedicating the majority of Server space to the Paid Pro version customers.

But, if you can get to the AVG Free manual download Update files on their web site, and manually install the updates, it''s almost as easy as auto-updating.

I use AVG Free and have been for years. I highly recommend it to Newbies, who don''t know how to Upgrade or Pay Online to activate a six month trial version that came with their computers.

Free is better than nothing at all.
