I had been using Norton av for several years and have 3 computers. I decided to try one of the free av on an older machine of mine. I tried AVG free first, it would scan only about half as many files that norton would scan. To me that can't be good. So I uninstalled and gave avast! a try, found a virus the others missed. Norton scanned about 253k files , avast! scans 340k files in less time also.I've read reviews that avast is slow but it's not to me at least. Works well with zone alarm, spy bot, adaware ect. Just my opinion if a av product scans more files it has to be better for the user, and you can't beat the price!

avast! Home Edition

My Score:

Actually, my biggest concern with AVG is that sometimes the automatic update would time out a lot, and that''s never good when the corporate network is at risk. With that in mind, and having no desire to use Norton (bloatware and the most troublesome and ineffective AV solution there is), I read a good review of avast. The program is not super fast but it is thorough, and that''s what I want. Have never had an update failure, and updating is pretty transparent to the user community. Finds and deletes more viruses than other programs I have used.

I agree with the others on this. I use Avast Pro at home and the Home edition at work! Quite simply the best FREEWARE antivirus programme I have used! Its much more functionable than Antivir Personal and AVG, which are great alternatives! It doesnt have a scheduled scans but then it''ll do everything else. I found the detection rates to be better than the other two. Definately would recommend this.

My Score:

Good program, not bloatware like Norton, McAfee, etc.
But if you want to have scheduled scans, pony up for the Pro version
(or, use the screen saver scan to scan whenever you''re AFK)
