I am here to disagree with Tim, Seems he doesnt actually know how to work on any O.S. at all. If his friend with the machine that was Possessed so to speak would have updated his antivirus he wouldnt have been in that situation. I have been a system tech since 1990 and I have no problems with the uninstall of any antivirus program including norton. AVG has let at least 40 viruses slip through on many machines that I have had to repair. I do agree with the fact that Norton uses more resources than some other AV programs. I tend to lean toward Panda but for most users Norton is a safer and more reliable for the average user. So if you are a novice user, Norton with its auto live update feature, is a safer chioce than AVG.

Unless your machine is hosed from the start or you are using Windows ME then I recommend using Norton for the ease of use it provides. I have never had to start a machine in safe mode after an uninstall of Norton AV unless you remove the shared Windows files that Norton uses to monitor the system. Only then does the machine have an issue. If you are running a Win9x based machine then there is a toll that comes on the Norton CD to clean up the registry after the uninstall. If Tim were and actual Tech he would know about SymClean and would have used it.

Norton AntiVirus Pro

What can I say? Obviously Mr Ferrini has made no worthwhile attempt to test the product before recommending it. Just because it hasn''t detected any viruses, doesn''t mean there aren''t any. Also, since the uninstaller is incapable of completely uninstalling it, one must assume that he''s never managed a successful uninstall either - you need another program, RNAV200x, for that.

Don''t spend your money on trash like Norton - stick with AVG & Antivir. If you really must *buy* an antivirus solution, get NOD32.

Nothing personal John, my advice to you is to scan your system with Antivir and get rid of all the viruses that Norton either didn''t notice, or noticed but was unable to do anything about.

I disagree with John. Firstly I have been a senior computer builder, technician and repair person since the late 1970''s with certifications too numerous to mention as well as instructor degrees. I will say that since Windows 95, Norton/Symantec have not really done anything to fix their extremely buggy software (which they ARE aware of) and Norton A/V (any version) does nothing but wreak havoc on your personal computer. There are plenty of other anti virus and firewall programs out there that work much better and many are free(ie. eTrust, AVG, AntiVir, Sygate, Kerio). Now we know that many people are loyal to Symantec for some reason (which I do not understand) but in general their software DOES NOT work well enough to be compared with the rest. It''s popularity is due to advertisements and being pre-installed on many new computers. So the choice is yours, install something that works or use Norton.
P.S. Since no one antivirus solution is perfect, it is always better to run two AV programs as well as a software firewall.
