Version 6.32.00.50 was pretty good and stable and reliable on my pc!-good detection rate much better than avg and slightly better than avast!- i tried all of them avast,avg,avpe,not much problems with avpe none with avg,avast high resource usage and poor GUI and not that user friendly to use fiddly,avpe except guard sometimes dosn't always load up properly on boot up,updates could be lengthy,(bad for dial up users)-new latest version 7.0 classic is a major problem lots bugs and slow down of the pc,lockups,freezing amonst lots other reported problems- check out the complaints against it on their avpe web site http://forum.antivir-pe.de,there is help with problems on their site,i uninstalled avpe version 7.0 recently until they have got their act together and fixed it properly!-shame really- gone back to AVG 7.0 more reliable and stable and less slow down on the pc.

AntiVir PE Version 6 was perfect. Version 7 slows down my Windows ME enormously. The Windows explorer could take 5 to 10 seconds to open the right pane. The PS2 mouse reacts jerkily and reluctantly. I detected that these annoyances vanish as soon as I terminate WinPatrol. I now use AVPE 7 together with Spybot and everything is OK.

Since I did not want to do without WinPatrol I let it work together with AVAST in another partition. These two go very well together. It did not take too long for me as a newbie to configure the different protection mechanisms like the Web Shield or the resident e-mail module with the corresponding account modifications of my Thunderbird 1.5.

My experience so far tells me that AVAST is not slower than AntiVir in spite of its Web Shield module scanning objects on-the-fly and the e-mail scanning which I did not use with AntiVir because it could have destroyed my (single-file) thunderbird mailbox. And AVAST does not use noticeably more resources than AntiVir. On the other hand it made my system much more stable than it was with AntiVir. Many of the frequent system crashes or freezings I got under AntiVir regime are gone now under AVAST.

So I would strongly support originalwildman in his advice to discouraged new AVAST users to give AVAST another try. It is not that difficult to learn and to use.

The best lean and mean new interface is clean and unitrusive, still works well on older harware unlike a well known big name that is imfamous for slow some PCs to a crawl.

Give AVAST another try. Contact their forum and ask how to set it up for the conditions of your particular machine. Once I learned how to do this for mine, I have become a very happy camper. I also use dial-up and do manual updating for everything. The longest it has taken for AVAST has been 32 seconds. I also once deleted this program because I did not know how to properly utilize it. I had used AVG in the past, but a vast majority of individuals say AVAST is much better. My feelings about AntiVir are well known, and nothing from them has done anything to change that opinion, in fact their recent release of version 7.0 just reconfirmed my assessment of them.
