Avast! used to be preferred alternative to the paid AV programs...until my father's PC was recently infected with a nasty trojan--Downloader.AY---that hosed his system. In Avast!'s defense, however, this is the only infection that has impacted either my father's PC or my kids' PC in over 2 years...and that's with broadband connections on both PC's.

I will likely still use Avast! on my kids' PC, but will likely upgrade my father's PC to Norton, which has never failed me in the 8+ years I've been using it.
