Wow! When I was using Norton two faithful years ago, my computer was home to malware of every type. Sluggish speed, slow internet, and many other insidious things were let by Norton's so called security. I was utterly disgusted at the amount of malware that concealed themselves from Norton's detection. It is also rather upseting to say that Norton's Anti-Spyware field is only slightly better than Windows Defender: junk. After dealing with Norton for 3 whole years, I was fed up and tried to uninstall it. Can I tell you what a nightmare this was (and I had to go through it twice)! Norton suddnely froze my machine forcing me to do a manual shutdown and then reboot. Upon reboot, I discovered that Norton couldn't be uninstalled via Add/Remove Programs which in turn caused me headaches worth of trouble. My advice:

Don't even think about Norton! Go fro Kaspersky, NOD32, McAfee, Trend Micro, or Panda.

Norton Sucks

I had Symantec Norton AV a few years back for my first system. It must have been the 2004 version. It performed adequately. I was infected a few times by trojans/viruses but owe that more to bad surfing habit/ignorance than anything else.

However I decided to try another AV/Firewall in Trend Micro PC cillin. Upon removing Norton AV/Firewall from my system I immediately was greeted with a slew of lock-ups and error messages. It appears that the program was so deeply ingrained in my system that without it my system ran quirky at best.To say the least I was not happy with the results.

What made me angry is that upon deciding to uninstall this application I went through hell trying to get the OS to operate the way it should operate i.e. smoothly and without errors.

A trip to the Symantec site was no help. It was a time consuming and confusing process as I tried to hunt down a remedy for my problem. Plus, at that time they did not have free phone support (maybe thats changed?)

The only thing that fully corrected the errors was a clean install of the OS, which was a major pain (it was my first attempt at a wiping my whole hard drive clean and reinstalling the OS).

As a consumer I would like to have the option of uninstalling a program and having my OS operate the normally i.e the way it did prior to installation of said program. I dont know maybe thats asking to much. No wait, its not.

I realize the review is for Norton AV Pro. However my experience with this companies software was so negative
and frustrating I will never get a Symantec product again...

PS. Trend Micro PC cillin Over All !!!

Free Phone support : )

My Score:

Norton is by far the largest system resource hog of all the antivirus programs. That aside, I''d give it about a 6/10, in other words, a few points better than most other AV programs. I have yet to find anything around 8-10/10 for windows. symantec needs to make a lite version of the AV that only scans when you ask it to and does nothing else at all, ever, and never runs a single file ever.

There is a way to stabilize NAV 2005/6/7 but it requires chopping up the program and is only suggested for users who are beyond the basics and can follow instructions to the T.

Note to administrator, I request permission to post or PM you for posting a quick fix for your members who do use NAV software and are not willing to change, this method is directly from a long a tedious off-the-record conversation with a Symantec support rep.

Norton is a decent AV product but when removing Viruss (Etc) from any PC always use to AV programs.

Never assume that NAV has caught it all, use housecall.trendmicro.com
as well as NAV>

You can also use Avast as a free download/registration for the home users.

Kinda funny that along side the terrible review of Norton are two Google ads for, what else? Norton AntiVirus pro!!!

You''re right; Norton is trash. Norton causes more problems then it solves, and it tries to takeover your machine. Norton is trash.
