I had way too much stuff on a customer's computer that had been running AVG free to say it is worth the cost. It may be free to install and run...but the customer just payed $120 to have the system cleaned this time.

I''ve had no problems with installation or use of AVG free through several upgrades. Download and installation of new AV sigs is quick and painless. AVG AV does not and does not claim to stop or remove adware or spyware. There are other programs for that purpose and for that matter you could upgrade to the full paid version of AVG if you need the features.

I''ll take the performance of AVG any day compared to the bloatware such as Symantec (Norton) or McAffee.

I had this problem and it was a bad download... Did you delete the original download before you tried again? Are you dialup or broadband? Can you do a broadband download to zip drive through a friend?

Can you help me upgrade from AVG 7.1 free to AVG 7.5 free ?
I''ve used AVG free for a couple of years and always thought it was good, but now they pulled the plug on support for 7.1, so I''m trying to upgrade to 7.5 which I downloaded twice.
I keep trying to upgrade as instructed on the website, but I get error messages :-
Error on installation or Repair
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgabout.dll: creating backup....
Access is denied. (5) %DESTINATION% = C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavgabout.dll.install_backup, %SOURCE% = C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavgabout.dll

Error on Uninstall :-
Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avg7us.lng: creating backup....
Access is denied. (5) %DESTINATION% = C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavg7us.lng.install_backup, %SOURCE% = C:Program FilesGrisoftAVG Freeavg7us.lng

I looked on the FAQ and deleted internet history, but that didn''t help either.

Does anybody know how to get around this please ?
(sorry if this is not the right place to post this request - I''m a new member and couldn''t find anywhere else to do it ... )

I have posted similar elsewhere on this site. I have used paid McaFee, Norton etc. AVG free gets my thumbs up every time. With any protection, scans must be run regularly. I run AVG every day at 07:20. I just hope they don''t spoil it like the others. I don''t know how they do it for free, but they do. By the way, I back up AVG by running online scans at Panda and Bitdefender. They rarely find stuff AVG has missed. When I say rarely, I don''t remember the last time thay did! And then it was tracking cookies and other ''medium'' threats, which anti-virus aren''t designed to find.

Pretty hard to give this review any credence with no details. C''mon, all AV are behind on sigs, AVG is right there with the other AVs most of the time.

Also remember defense in layers concept: never use AV alone which what I''m guessing happened here...or else the user intentionally installed some game or screen saver that had some undetectable critters attached.

But I''m just wildly guessing because we dont know do we...because you neglected the details.

Ignore this persons incomplete review.

When you say the system had to be cleaned, I assume you are referring to adware/spyware. I doubt AVG missed a true virus.

AVG Free is designed to prevent/clean virus infection using as little system resources as possible to keep from bogging down your ''puter. This is what I love about AVG.

Internet security suites use so much of your system resources, your computer may be safe, but SLOW!

Running AdAware/Spybot once a month or so clears out the pesky adware. This method gives me a peppy little ''puter, that''s free of malware.

Cheers!

I never had any problems using AVG. I put it on my pastor''s computer and it removed 1100 viruses and trojans and garbage that Norton refused to touch.
