This is an incredibly powerful piece of software.
With the aid of the HJT Tutorial on the CastleCops.com website, the databases also mirrored there, and Google, I was able to clean an otherwise hopeless system in an hour or two. I could have cleaned it manually using regedit, but such searches are incredibly hit-miss and tedious and the entire process would've taken me HOURS to do an incomplete job. HJT runs the searches for me and is more thorough in those searches. Where Spybot S&D, Norton Antivirus, NoAdware, and AdAware failed, this software succeeded.
Not for the faint of heart or computer illiterate, HJT scans the computer for every program that is running, everything that has attached itself to Internet Explorer, and everything that runs when you start up the computer...WHETHER GOOD OR BAD. This program is intentionally hard to use. This is where those databases (and google) come into play. With their help you can figure out what roughly 95-100% of the stuff HJT found is. Mis-using HJT and fixing the wrong thing can hose your system, so its use requires extreme care. Each use gets faster and more comfortable, though.
I can't guarantee that it'll find everything, but if Internet Explorer is acting up, Norton can't help you, and Symantec doesn't know what's going on, HiJackThis is probably the best microscope to examine your computer with.
