Simply put, the best free and well-known - I emphasize - free and well-known A/V. There are better free but not appropriate for anything but extremely expert users.

AVG Free

My Score:

I changed my mind based on recent news and hassles with their absurdly complex and poorly written (in English at least) new GUI. Essentially, this thwarts the user from killing viruses.

I figure this is not a good thing for an anti-virus program.

Mind you - using AVG FREE, I haven''t gotten a single virus in years. But that''s because I don''t crappy browsers like IE6 on my windows machines. IE7 has been a major step up in my view - have been using it for nearly 2 years between my participation in its BETA and then when it shipped RTM. But mostly I use FF, and upon occasion Opera.

So, AVG FREE has remained great for me, but I''m fully aware its A/V Comps are not nearly competitive* and many of my geek acquaintances have in the past few months ditched it in favor of today''s hottest Freebie. I make the case that, so long as a user''s careful about not visiting idiot sites and uses a good Hosts File, why chase the latest free a/v fad?
