I have been searching for a replacement client as my aging Outlook 2000 has ceased security updates and the virus laden environment we live in has had me worried more and more about e-mail as a method of entry. I thus started my trek through mail clients to try and discover one that would replace the functions of outlook that I used and give me good value for preferably a low cash investment.

I stumbled across the site for Firebird 0.7 and decided to give it a try and the following are my observations.

I loved the install it was easy and went without a hitch. The default settings were reasonable and enabled a fast setup. Even configuration of the client was easy with simple one step imports of settings from Outlook or Outlook express, even Eudora was supported automaticly. I was able to bring in account settings, old mail and my address book. I was quite happy with this feature, it saved me alot of time.

Thunderbird has one nice usefull feature I found immediately attractive as I began to play with it. That being the junk filter that allows flexible control of junk messages, including sending them to a special folder and crippling any html in messages marked as junk to allow the messages to be reviewed more safely. All this can be set automaticly with a single click rather than setting up filter rules. Another plus.

The mail sending and composing window is nice, allowing HTML and plain text e-mail and can even be configured to send in the proper format to obey preferences stored on your contacts as to the types of e-mail they can read.

My only gripe thus far is that the mozilla site was not conducive to finding easy answers to application questions, but as the saying goes, for free you can not beat the price.

Overall if you do not need the calendar and colaboration functionality of Outlook, Firebird is an excellent mail utility that blows Outlook Express away with ease.
