|
|
Well, I thought I had it all set up, the new FAH on my Linux rig, BUT....darn, it set up a new WU and it's not configured to anybody.
Can somebody help? I can't find info online, been searching like crazy. Linux being new to me doesn't help.
What I have is the whole set up in an FAH folder, cool, like you do it. Ok, but it wouldn't let me configure, until I changed the name of the exe file. That worked great, got it configured and set the IDs, it proceeded to process the first WU normally. Well, I THINK after I shut down my PC, the log read that potential conflict was detected. It DL'd a new set up and started again, anonymous ID. Well, then I noticed I have a whole new set of files now, NOT in the FAH folder, which is the ones it's using.
So what I did before didn't work. The instructions I found online just said once it's installed, you execute it, which I did, and then you configure it. But it won't let me do it.
Thanks. _________________

Since my call for a show of hands didnt turn up any, my suggestion is to go to the Folding Forums and look for a Linux specific forum.
I had a brief try with Lindows and wasnt able to make heads or tails of it after two hours and was on a time restriction, so just formatted it off. I would have really liked to experiment with it. _________________

You "sound" unsure.
There must be a way, obviously. It is similar to the best of my knowledge to the Windows Console versions.
I was under the impression that wawadave uses Linux, but that might not be the case. The only other ones who might be able to help you out would be Barrius or satchick.

I don't know if I could get used to using command line all the time. |
Shitfless,
Cool! You really interested, huh? If you like computers as much as I think you do, you gotta try Linux.
You don't use the shell all the time. And it's really not very hard. (now, you heard that from me, and you know my knowledge level! ) The command line gives you power that will hook you in no time. You could partition space on an M$ system (couple gig, more is better) and install without reformatting your drive. Installing M$ AFTER Linux is supposed to be very problematic.
I recommend buying the package ($80 at computer store, Novell's Suse Linux 9.2 Pro (9.3 in a week) 90 day support) Get the Pro. Tons of programs and utilities, two huge manuals, 2 DVDs, 5 CDs, installs 32 bit, and 64 bit for all the stuff that will be coming out in the future. It is WELL WORTH the cost because you get the programs, manuals (AND full manual plus additional manuals on the discs that load with the install), and discs already done, no long downloads.
Includes several browsers, big Office package, burners, players, graphics programs, mail, bluetooth, games, AWESOME screen savers, tons of utilities, and way more. Most importantly, you have CONTROL. Waaay more control. Shiftless, you know how much "fun" I've had with computers, right? Well, I LOVE this new setup. Someone said: run Linux if you want a computer, run Windows if you want an XP. (no offense, anybody) You can keep M$ anyway, if you want, at least til you're good on Linux.
There are tons of *nix versions, if you buy the first one with all the bells and whistles, learn it, then later you could DL other versions for free and check out which Linux you like best. It's very exciting.
Here's a link for the 9.3 coming out in a week: http://www.novell.com/products/linuxprofessional/preview/index.html
I'd be happy to whip up an orientation and basics tutorial for you, Shiftless, to make it easier (or anybody) I'm pretty good at writing that kind of stuff. A few basics, some good websites, stuff like that. You'd be beyond it in a few days. There are tons of help sites and write ups, forums, all that. For someone who knows nothing, I mean NOTHING, it's a bit confusing at first, but i'm beyond that already. I've noticed things are written in long paragraphs that go on forever and it's a tad hard to find the "do this...then do this..." parts. (programmers are better with the numbers than the letters???)
There's a website where anyone can "publish" tutorials and people can upgrade/change grammar/spelling, etc, to anybody's document. It's great because it helps get the info out, nice thing about opensource. I have already done a major upgrade to one doc and am working on a second that this guy wrote. English is not his language so he's happy that I'm helping. That's the way it works in the opensource world. And really helpful people, too. You can run FAH and there's utilities for controlling, viewing, etc.
This is not meant to be a sales pitch, but I must admit I am totally sold on Linux (the Suse package anyway). In a few months, I expect to be really feeling the joy of a long overdue return on my investment in the M$/hack attack charade. You'd pick it up much faster than me. ...Just partition a couple gig and play when you have the time! ....and it is A LOT of fun!
