This filterset is for use with Proxomitron 4.5j which can be downloaded here. The filterset consists of the following:
- JD's Advanced Alpha 14 Oct 04 (significantly modified)
- Kye-U's Browser Security Pack (latest version customised with popup alerts disabled)
- Paranoid2000's CSS Toolbar (disabled by default)
- zlib.dll version 1.2.3
- z12's Caching Filters (modified)
- Lots of other additional filters and updates
It is designed to be used with up to date versions of the major browsers. If you are using an older browser there may be vulnerabilities which are no longer covered by this filterset, so update your browser before using it.
WHY YOU SHOULD USE IT: Proxomitron is the best web filtering program on the planet. My filterset enhances the basic functionality of this awesome program by giving you a significantly updated set of filters which should kill 99% of all ads, banners, and other marketing junk that is foisted on the web surfing public these days. It blocks a lot of malicious scripting and kills known vulnerabilities for the common browsers. It caches pages locally to speed up subsequent visits while being smart enough to recognise changes so you don't see stale web pages. Dialup users will see a large speed boost in sites they visit often, and a good speed boost in those sites that normally download lots of ads.
It allows you to view the web your way, not the way the coder insists you view it. What does that mean? It means you can alter the very elements that are being fed to your browser as they come in. So you can block frames, change site layouts and colours, hide sections, anything. If your browser can read it, you can alter it. There has never been a single program so powerful in the way it can change your web browsing forever. Use Proxomitron with this filterset and you may never want to surf without it again.
** NOTE ** Proxomitron, and especially this filterset added to it, substantially alter the underlying elements of a web page. You are bound to come across pages that look broken or incomplete when using this filterset due to the strong filtering being used. You can post the links of such pages here if they are not behaving properly, that way they can be looked at to see if an exclusion is warranted, or if a filter needs to be fixed. Bear in mind though that lots of sites will look less cluttered but still work as advertised. This is the point of Proxomitron so don't report sites for that reason alone
NEW USERS: If you haven't used Proxomitron before, install that first, then grab my latest filterset from either of the following locations and install after installing the main program:
FILTERSET DOWNLOAD MIRROR 1 (preferred)
FILTERSET DOWNLOAD MIRROR 2 (backup)
The 1k file is a GPG signature and is not necessary unless you wish to verify that it hasn't been tampered with (see below for more info).
Proxomitron 4.5j and this filterset work fine under all flavours of Windows including the new x64 version.
EXISTING USERS: If you are using my filterset already and haven't modified it in any way you can simply install it directly over an existing installation after shutting Proxomitron down. If you have modified the filters outside of these forums then make sure you back up your changes or you will lose them. You have been warned!
This set is based on JD's excellent filter set and while I have changed a lot since moving to his October 2004 Alpha build, the original credit must go to him. All I have done is enhance his already fantastic set to make it a little more user friendly for those who aren't comfortable with delving into the guts of the system.
As always, give feedback in this forum and if possible, post solutions where you find them. They will then be integrated into the next set and benefit everyone.
Files will have SHA-1 checksums for download integrity so you know you've got a good file. A great little context menu utility for verifying and creating MD5 and SHA-1 checksums called DigestIt2004 can be found here.
ADVANCED USERS: If you wish to manually update the filters simply open the installer using a program capable of opening RAR files and extract the contents.
For an up to date SSL pack you can use my installable version of Sidki's latest. If you aren't sure what this means then the pack is probably not for you.
There is always a GPG signature file alongside the main download for those who use GPG/PGP to verify files. You can get my GPG key here (search for key ID 0x53F79CF2) or download it via my sig. By verifying that the file hasn't been tampered with, you can rest assured that the filterset you download has not been modified and you are getting a quality controlled version that has been widely tested by myself and others. _________________ Get my current Proxomitron filters and Firefox CSS files here or here.
