What File system does Linux use? e.g NTFS, FAT32

I'm thinking about having a dual boot with a Window XP and Linux. I have a partition with just music on it. Will I be able to play music through linux?
They would have to be the same file system right?

Most distributions of Linux can read windows ntfs files but writing to them is a problem.

Your Linux will need its own partition to install to and will format it in one of several common choices, ext2, ext3 or reiser4 are common. Check CastleCops Link/t134225-Total_Linux_newbie_needs_help_on_installing.html for more on partitions.

Your install manual should have a good tutorial and guide.

Linux can read and write to FAT32 partitions but NTFS is read-only (well, writing is extremely beta, unstable, and overall risky at this time).

For playing music from your Windows NTFS partition, that's reading and you'll have no problems with that, I do it all the time.
