Question Hello, I suppose you could say I'm new to this, but my CDROM drive opens and closes rapidly during the boot up process. It has been doing this for a little while now, but it's really beginning to hack me off. Can anybody help? Also, since I had the blaster virus the buttons on the top of my keyboard (you know the ones that connect me to my email and the internet) and I cant seem to reprogram them again. Any Ideas? Sad

it sounds like you may still have some "virus" like things still going on. has the system been checked for virus? that is boot to a clean CD? Norton antivirus CDs are bootable and you can do a virus check from it.
if you look at the help file for norton (providing that is the antivirus that you are using) and it'll give you the command line command to start the scan.
if you need more help with this just let me know.

I did have the blaster worm a little while ago but fixed that with the help of Symantec and Microsoft. My CDRom drive has been doing this for quite some time now and has finally hacked me off. I was with norton but recently changed to AVG and to the best of my knowledge my machine is virus free. My keyboard is one of those types that allows you to program shortcuts to web pages based on topics and email etc. It doesn't seem to work anymore, I mean I can type alright, but when I press to connect to the net the word connect would flash up at the bottom of my screen and and I would connect to the internet. There used to be a place where I could set the pages to the buttons but now it appears to be gone.

lizardking71,
i haven't found anything about your cdrom opening and closing during boot up. one thought i had was going into bios and making sure that the system doesn't try to boot to the cdrom.
about your keyboard. you may have to reinstall the drivers/software for you to be able to program the keys again.
let me know how it goes.

My wife had a similar problem with her CD drive on an ASUS A7A board. Worked fine for a long period then all of a sudden the drive would open and stay open.

I reinstalled the driver - didn't work.
I removed the old driver, shut down, removed the drive, power cycled, installed the drive and let PnP do its thing - everything seemed to load fine - didn't work - drive still popped out.

Went to store - paid $35 for a new LG CDRW.
Removed old driver, removed old drive, and power cycled.
Installed new LG drive, PnP did its thing - drive works - Momma's happy therefore everybody is happy.

Haven't had much chance to look into it lately, drive works fine except for the opening and closing thing. I was thinking about getting a combi drive so it may be a case of going to the store.....Laughing
