While most firewalls, anti-spyware and AV applications are discussed at this site, I have not seen any review of Comod products including their firewall. Has anyone used them? How do Comodo security products compare to other wel known brands? Just curious.

Hi TauRus,

I don't know if you have ever been to Wilders Security but, a number of people there have tried it. Personally I haven't tried it yet.

Pros & cons of Comodo Firewall v2, pls

Here is a site that tests a number of firewalls against leak tests, comodo included.

Hi TauRus,

like so many other firewalls, I tried Comodo a few weeks ago. It has serious potential to be an outstanding fw, but it needs alot of work before I would recommend anyone use it.

Stability issues - causes explorer and other apps to freeze

Application rules configuration on the fly creates far too simplistic rulesets.

Component control is lacking in thoroughness

Logging is inadequate

You may want to check periodically on developments.

As NAMOR stated, the Wilder's forum is a good place to check for this.

I installed Comodo firewall as well. After wto days of fighting with it, I finally found some (not all) answers in the Comodo users forums. It appears that Comodo firewall has "known" issues with both AVG antivirus and Thunderbird mail client. The "advic" I received suggested basically that I repalce the AVG antivirus with Comodo Antivirus and that since Thunderbird was obviously reaching the servers, the problem must lie witht the way I configured Thunderbird.

For the sake of curiouslty, I installed Comodo antivirus after uninstalling AVG. Witht this change in the system, Windows boot up became unreliable (Windows 2000 machine). No rmedy was achieved for the other problems mentioned.

After uninstalling all Comodo products (and removing residual files). all problems caesed.

I am using Comodo's firewall on XP Home edition and I haven't experienced one stability issue.
Here's a rough assessment of what I have noticed:

Pros- Easy to set up.
Passes Shields Up with "Tru Stealth."
No software conflicts.
No freeze ups.

Con- Comodo Launch Pad slows startup time. The easy fix is to disable Launch Pad from startup. The firewall will still run, there just isn't a tray icon for it.

Hi TestMan,

I hear that earlier versions were pretty hard on system resources, like memory and CPU....but that they were "working on" lowering them in future versions/releases. How are you finding the memory and CPU useage at this time, and what version of Comodo are you using?

As for this....have you reported this to them, via their forums? It seems that they listen and respond to customers with suggestions according to what I've seen one of their reps - Meliah (I believe?) - say in various forums. I wouldn't want the "Launch Pad" either...but missing the system tray icon would be a concern. Hopefully maybe this is something that they will correct, if it is pointed out by users.....

Hi JRCATES,

Regarding resource usage..the two services relating to Comodo are using just over 27,000k.
Version is-2.2.0.11.

According to some of Melih's posts at Wilders, Comodo is aware of the Launch Pad/tray icon issue.
Melih posted that a new, lighter version will be available soon(this week?)in the same thread at Wilders.
I'm confident that the firewall be lighter and it may take time to change the use of Launch Pad and get a tray icon. But I think that issue will be addressed in the near future also.
Comodo(Melih in particular )seems to be very receptive, and responsive to suggestions. Smile

I found comodo to be a very decent firewall when i used it. Its only new and does have few improvements to be made but based on the fact that its free and offers very good protection it pretty damn good.

I have been using Outpost Pro for 3 years (antispyware disabled) and I recently switched to Comodo Firewall, since they both have almost the same functions, except Comodo goes a bit further with parent aplication rules and monitoring OLE/COM requests. Version 2.2 takes about 40-50 MB RAM and lacks in creating good rules. I am just trying 2.3 beta, which should be stable in 1-2 weeks and it is much more better. Memory usage dropped to 15-35 MB RAM. At setup, I can choose 6 levels of setting up rules from basic 1 rule per an aplication to expert rules with protocol, port, IP and parent aplication. At setup it is also possible to choose registry protection for Comodo, but then it is not possible to import rules. Rules can be imported/exported only via registry. I disabled logging, but it logs potentionally dangerous threads automatic and it can also log blocked traffic as well as anything, that user will choise. I just still can not believe, that such a great firewall, which is actually better than paid, is freeware. Smile

Issues: a few times a day I get lags, eg mouse freezes for a sec, it has no systray icon.

The new updated version(2.3.4.45)of Comodo's Firewall is available and the resource usage has dropped.
My two complaints were the high resource usage and the Comodo Launch Pad.
Both have been addressed and corrected. Smile

On XP Home w/512mb RAM Comodo is using app. 24,000 k total in Task Manager.

Way to go Comodo!!!!

Though it's only been a couple days testing this latest version, I am simply blown away at how good this firewall has become! Believe me when I say I am a hardcore Outpost Pro fan, but Comodo has developed their product into one that will give Outpost and any other pc firewall a run for their money.

It needs some improvements in how rules are created, the logging is too rudimentary, and a better way is needed to save rule configurations, but it otherwise engulfs a pc with what seem to be inpenetrable defenses. I have not experienced any system stability issues nor conflicts with other applications and memory is running at a near-constant 25 Mb

Very nice work by Comodo.
