I do not want other users of my PC (WinME) to easily see and access certain volumes of my Extended Partition. To this end it is not sufficient to hide them in Windows Explorer e.g. by means of TWEAK UI because a simple windows search or related functions could cause them to show up.
Is there a possibility in the registry to restrict the windows search function so that it would no longer be possible through simple windows functions to make specified volumes visible in Windows Explorer and access them?

I use BootIt Next Generation from Terabyte Unlimited. It can of course password protect the boot partition. But if I want to share the same boot partition with other users and (once up in Windows ME) do not want them to see and access certain volumes of the Extended Partition (pure data partitions) this cannot be done by the partition manager.
As concerns encryption programs I have thought of that as well but I do not like to work that way. I just wanted to know whether there is a simple registry modification that would prevent the windows search function for certain users (beginners) from searching those drives that have been hidden for them by means of a tweaking tool like Tweak UI of X-Setup.
Moreover, your encryption software is intended for Windows XP/2000/2003 and Linux whereas we are dealing here with WinME.

paretition magic i have used to hide partitions from the os.
because bootit won,t don,t mean others don,t.
their are other encryption programs that work in m.e.
any thing as simple as a reg hack can be changed in windows. security through obscurity may work. but once its figured out its useless.
but feel free to shoot holes in this see you!! _________________ Brycetechs new tut dvd http://tinyurl.com/2u7rpk

If I hide drives (volumes, partitions – the terminology is not well-defined nor commonly understood; what I mean is data partitions; the tweak programs call them "drives") on the level of the boot menu they will be hidden for any user including myself. I wanted them to be hidden and access-blocked for the other users only. I think this can only be done in Windows.

That is why I mentioned my co-users are beginners. They will not try to see and access the drives hidden by Tweak UI. But they may be tempted to open files on the hidden drives once they find them by a Windows search and I would like to avoid that happening.

For 98/ME systems, Scramdisk 3.01r3 works great. It will encrypt entire partitions and mount them as virtual drives. I have software installed in one of them that I don't want anyone else using. Works fine this way.
It's free and available at:

On 98/ME, it's as good as it gets.
