It seems that millions of people use AVG Free Edition and seems to be the most popular AV app right now for home use but it just looks so plain and simple, it's hard to believe it protects you lol but I guess it does.
I have a few question...
1-Is there a way to disable that 30second timer when it detects a virus, opens windows etc.?
2-How come if I download an exe that is infected, you first have to open it for AVG to detect the virus or scan it manually and also if I drag an infected file from an archive, it won't stop you from dragging it out if it's infected. Is there a way to fix that?
3-I keep disabling the mail scanner, but after reboot it's enabled again. How can I permanently disable it?

If that timer is like the "update definitions" timer, right clicking on it during its countdown will stop the countdown and permit a review of the update details.
Even with the paid version, I've never found any user-controlled options regarding the timer.

There are two other ways AVG can be configured to detect an infected file - during a scheduled scan and when used in conjunction with certain download managers, AVG will automatically scan files when they are downloaded.

Try using MSCONFIG (uncheck AVG7_EMC) to prevent the E-mail message scanner from starting.

I use AVG Free Edition too but, a personal advice, do not install it if you think that your friend/client/parent is a "high-risk" person, someone that have frequent virus and spywares on his computer, the one who's always the first infected by any new viruses.
As reported by http://isc.sans.org (as for other antivirus editors too), Grisoft aren't so fast to protect their customers against new viruses. Consequently, AVG isn't able to detect as much viruses than a commercial AV.
Personally, I use it because it's the fastest and it's light for my computer.
